That was fun to watch cross-eyed.

A Simple Review of BioShock Infinite

@Warren...yeah I am kinda disapointed to have such a great and expensive player be so picky on synergies...anyways, thanks for always commenting on my posts, feels less like I am talking to my hand here.

Not sure if this has been pointed out before, but it looks like JPS is finally set to release their first headphone, the planar magnetic Abyss at around $5K.

Compared to other orthos like Audez'e or Hifiman, the Abyss isn't as aesthetically pleasing in my humble opinion... at least it looks somewhat badass, if you know what I mean. It also weighs 660 grams without cable, meaning it'll be quite heavy and perhaps not so comfortable around your head. With a low sensitivity of 85 dB, I bet it will take a beast of an amp to drive it to its fullest potential, like the HE-6.

The question is, how will it compete sonically against the LCD-2/3 and HE-500/6?

Thread Starter

Oh, it's been pointed out.

The Abyss has been much discussed in this thread lol.

The highlights:

-> JPS told me no review samples existed when I asked if auditioning it was possible. Said all units were allocated to go to vendors already and that the only way to preview it would be through a vendor. Suggested The Cable Company's lending program, which I believe is a rental service that requires a fee. One of the most absurd responses I've ever gotten from a manufacturer.

-> A few weeks ago they told another head-fier review samples existed, but that they were "all spoken for until the fall." Not sure I believe this.

-> There was a public demo at a noisy mall. I know some folks who tried them. Comfort was said to be sub-par, and adjustment of the headband very awkward. My friend struggled for five minutes or so just trying to get them to fit, to which the rep. said he shouldn't expect to get the fit right so quickly, that it would take "a day or two to dial in properly."

-> Sound was described as pretty good. Nothing offensive. Yet nothing spectacular. My friend compared it to the HE-500, and several other folks I talked to who tried them said they'd place it at the 700 to 1000 USD level. So the $5600 price tag (it's gone up even more!) is a little hard to fathom.

-> Comes with a fancy display box, stand, leather tote bag, and big meaty cables. This all strikes me as an attempt to justify the price after they already decided on it.

-> There's a blurb on their site about each part being laser engraved "for collectors." I'll let that speak for itself.

I'm actually very interested in listening to these, as new orthos are always a nice prospect. They've put a lot of work into R&D, and the drivers are very special from what I've read. They're purposefully designed one-sided; the only other ortho currently like that is the oft overlooked HE-4.

So yes, the product is extremely interesting to me. Less positive feelings about the company's approach to these.

Edit:

As an aside, there have been some JPS ads popping up here and elsewhere. They're rather interesting because they claim to trademark various phrases that seem fairly generic. Someone on another site did a search and discovered the phrases in question actually weren't trademarked.

For example: "We Know AC Power (TM) Cables"

The trademark logo is after "We Know AC Power." Cables seems to be omitted. However "We Know AC Power" isn't actually a trademark held by anyone according to an online search. Very curious.

Due to unforeseen complications at work taking up my time last week, my Bioshock Infinite odyssey begins today.  Like Mupps, I'll probably take it a little slower as to savor the experience.

Maybe double amping would help?  I wouldn't be so quick to sell off the DX100 just yet.  You might still go back to it if the Tera refuses to play nice with a majority of your IEMs.  BTW, is there any chance that there might be something wrong with your specific unit?  Might want to dig around HF to see if others have reported similar experiences.  I'm extremely lucky in that I've never received any defective gear.  But that doesn't always hold true for everyone.  For example, Mupps is a defect magnet.  frown.gif

Also, you're welcome lol.  And look on the bright side as things could always be worse.  Better talking to our own hands than the hands of others right?

I hope so.

I'm pretty sure they actually told him that.  We were Skyping when he got the email, and he's pretty trustworthy.  Oh wait, you meant JPS might have been full of *****... oh okay, +1 then.

Also, in other news, apparently da hoes be winning... frown.gif

Eww, I prefer that my torture devices not come with earpads.

No spoilers please, but does Bioshock Infinite have an awesome, totally unforeseen twist like that of the original Bioshock? I finally purchased the CD but can't play nowadays due to a big test coming up. I'm dying to play it, so once the test is over I'm gonna play it nonstop and hopefully beat the whole game in 1-2 days.

You're in for a treat.

One thing I tend to do is consciously look for potential twists in a game/movie. BI was awesome because, of all the scenarios I could possibly envision, the ending was completely out of left field. Even though we're actively telling you that the will blow you away, it will still do so with the same intensity.

You realize that it's not logically possible to answer that question, right?

Amping the Tera negates portability. But don t worry, it is a great rig with 1plus2 or Kaede. I am not going to be a spoiled child with such an awesome rig. Ai will keep the dx100 for my other Iems, and try to get a rwak100 as I have heard it is as good as the dx100 for Iems...and I want portability. I am considering the upcoming 901...but sooo ugly.

There is no defect IMO. The Tera has high impedance output which is known to cause bass roll off in certain multi ba Iems.
