I love the LG to bits (I wanna kiss it on the lips). However it's just not the best option for extremely sensitive, low impedance headphones. The gain is determined by the tubes because that's just the nature of the beast. On most tubes I've tried, there's hum with very sensitive headphones.

I've talked to Alex about possibly getting an impedance adapter made.

The ZDSE however is a much quieter amp for extremely sensitive headphones. If you're not bothered by hum then it's no big deal. I'm really anal about that kind of thing however, so I don't use the LG for those types of headphones.

I see. Despite being a tube amp, the ZDSE is dead silent with my TH900 without any audible hum or background noise. I have to admit, it does sound more tube-like than my Soloist (whose clarity is unmatched), but the massive soundstage it throws over the two closed cans of the TH900 is just pure bliss. Tube rolling from stock Tung-Sol 6SL7 to 50's-made Mullard ECC35 made a significant improvement too.

Stefan AudioArt has recently upgraded its umbilical power cable for the ZDSE and it's on my way. With that my end-game headphone system will be complete.

I don't think I heard hum with the TH-900 pairing, but it could just be me and how deaf I am.

Dave can chime in if he noticed anything that bothered him.

Still a no thank-you at the $2k price point though. Maybe something I would pick up if it was a bit less than half the retail price.

Although honestly I would have preferred to pick up the TH-900 at something like half retail as well. redface.gif

Yeah, the variation among LCD-3s is notoriously extreme. I've heard several different sets which all sounded quite different. The best pair sounded a lot clearer, more detailed and articulate. Purrin also had a pair for a while he called "super LCD-3s" because they were better than any other set he heard before. Other sets sound absolutely terrible: muffled, congested, lacking any sense of air. My own set post-RMA is somewhere in the middle of the spectrum I'm guessing.

Audez'e screwed up big time. The problem is, even if you send your set in for the RMA fixes, there's no guarantee it'll actually help much. Most own set sounded only slightly clearer afterward, but still nowhere near the best sets. Worse still, there have been reports of "fixed" LCD-3s reverted back to their previous, muffled state. I really don't think it's a matter of damping materials like some suggested at first, but rather a problem with the drivers themselves. Like, they lose tension or degrade over time perhaps.

Re: TH900: I picked mine up for 1700 USD or thereabouts when it was first launched. I've been living with the TH600 for a while now, which retails for about $900-ish, and I've been enjoying it. Comes surprisingly close to the TH900 for half the price.

There isn't anything about tube amps that make them inherently noisier than solid state. In fact plenty of tube amps are whisper quiet with abyssal black backgrounds while plenty of solid state amps hum. The SPL Phonitor for example is very noisy with sensitive headphones. On the other hand, most of the Eddie Current amps are very quiet. Craig uses an AD2000 to test for noise.

The Soloist is very similar to the Gilmore Dynalo from what I understand, so that isn't too surprising. As far as solid state amps go the Dynalo (and most Gilmore designs) are about as stereotypically analytical as you can get.

The gain will entirely depend on the tubes used, so some tubes will definitely be quieter than others. If I spent a lot of time searching for just the right set, it's enitrely possible I could find one with minimal noise, but that would be a lot of effort and there's no guarantee they'd even sound good w/ the TH900 despite not being as noisy. I'm still keeping an ear out however (and hoping for an impedance adapter).

The hum for sensitive headphones is something Dr. Cavalli acknowledged in the LG announcement thread. When testing it with the AD2000 he noticed a slight hum using the stock tubes. The AD2000 is really the ubiquitous "canary in the mine" headphone (to borrow Dr. Cavalli's descriptor) when it comes to detecting noise.

I haven't had any issues with hum personally, but I don't really have any low-impedance sensitive cans.  I haven't noticed any hum with my HD650's or recently received HD800's, and I didn't have enough time with the TH900 to really look for it.  For what it's worth, I tried my dad's ATH-M50's in the LG and didn't hear any hum.  If I hadn't had my Liquid Glass down in Austin with me and Alex in the same room, I probably wouldn't have sent it in for the mod he issued to reduce hum with sensitive cans.  For all the other original owners who reported it, I never heard any that wasn't fixed by swapping tubes (tubes that generated hum with all of my headphones).  I'm generally sensitive to hum (though not so much as you MF), but try as I might, I haven't been able to find it.

I'll probably be adding a more linear model like the UERM (not the UEPRM) or CW-L05QD to complete the CIEM trifecta at some point.
Hello MuppetFace, interesting selection of CIEMs you have there. Could I ask you what drove to choose these in particular. Also do you ever use portable sources such as dx100, 801, ak100 and such because I never heard you mention any.

My Harley arrived this morning in the mail. I think Evil Eddie has less then honorable thoughts running through his mind. Oh well, she is a femme fatale who knows how to take care of herself. Ol Eddie better watch it or he's in for a world of hurt.

@MuppetFace

When I was at my local headphone meet I listened to the LCD 3 vs the LCD 2 rev 2.2 back to back and the LCD 3 left me very unimpressed. I think the LCD 2.2 is a great headphone but the 3, for it's price I think it's a complete waste of money. That's just my opinion of coarse. I personally really didn't like the rather muffled sounding mids on the LCD 3 and from there on in it went downhill as far as the 3 was concerned. Needless to say it was an eye opening experience as far as the summit-fi LCD-3 hype train was concerned. The more time I invest into investigating certain areas of this hobby the more my eyes are open. Sometimes what I learn I consider positive but other times I begin to understand why certain people on the forums should best be ignored in order to not waste ones time and money on empty hype.

It'll be good to see you again.  I'll probably bring a little less of my gear though (one amp, one or two cans, and my computer).

Well, you should go to the Dallas meet then.  It'll probably be around the middle of May (we haven't really started the planning yet).

OK this post is probably going to sound a little strange but everyone please bare with me until the end of the post. As most of you know I like some Tiesto, no I'm not a hardcore fan but some of his stuff I do like. Seems like everyone I know who listens to Tiesto always seem to rave about this one album titled Elements Of Life. A few years back I bought the CD and personally I just never got why everyone was so high on this album, I just didn't get it. Tonight I had my 4A paired up with my CLAS-db/RX MKIII-B rig and on a lark I clicked on the Elements Of Life album. I'm about half way through the CD and....I FINALLY GET IT!!!!!.........I REALLY REALLY GET IT!!!!

I know....what can I say I'm weird

@tomscy2000

You really didn't know evil Eddie was the mascot for Iron Maiden???

I have this poster framed and in storage downstairsbiggrin.gif

Ah, I see... Iron Maiden isn't exactly the kind of music I listen to. I listen to extremely boring, extremely mellow music, lol.

I had a very similar experience to this one the first time I heard Norah Jones on HD600 after hearing nothing but great things about her. I didn't understand what anybody was talking about, but I bought one of her albums on a whim and heard her voice through my first full-size headphones that could really do justice to the midrange. Converted instantly.
