Although I have the Asgaard 2 on order...I am seriously considering having a Crack, built for me..{I have no tools,or time & have never soldered anything }.

I'm reading some very, positive reviews about the Crack with speedball upgrade..so..??

After many, many emails to the builder, the one MUST upgrade, seems to be the Speedball upgrade.

Of course high quality tubes also, make a big difference, both in SQ & price.,as it did, when I used a Lyr amp

This amp will be used for my Hd800,DT880,& AlphaDogs

I owned a fully upgraded Crack for quite a while, and to this day I kind of wish I wouldn't have gotten rid of it. It was a PHENOMENAL amp, and you can tweak even more with rolling. Very full bodied but never sounding lazy with my (at the time) HD600's, and if you put the time and work into it the build can be to die for gorgeous. The kit itself is also incredibly beginner friendly so no worries.

Of course, I'll always build them for people if need be wink.gif

I like the HPA-V100 with the 4.A. IEMs are the main reasons why I keep it; I prefer my receivers for powering headphones.

The only tube amp I've tried with IEMs is the TU-882, and that didn't sound good. It's too noisy for IEMs, even if it's reasonably quiet with full-sized cans.

My power finally came back, it took all night and all morning to finally get the juice flowing agin in my part of town but i'm finally back online and the house is thankfully starting to warm up.

I've listened to the Crack with Speedball upgrade and I can affirm what Magick and mosshorn are both saying is true. The friend who I bought my K240's from had that amp and I heard it paired with the K240 multiple times during meets. My current RX MKIII-B can drive my K240's with ease but they still don't sound as nice as when they were paired with the Crack amp. My buddy has since sold the Crack amp and I actually had a chance at it when I bought the K240. In hindsight I really really regret not jumping on the opportunity. I really would have loved to have heard the Crack paired with a Q can. Would have been interesting to have heard the end result.

I tried it a little, it was nice, but not as nice as a Senn on there. There was a touch more energy and weight to the bottom end, and overall it felt a tad bit more cohesive. This was with a RCA cleartop 6AS7 and a Telefunken ribbed plate 12AU7,

I want another one just to have a reason to tube collect again. I got fierce on some of those Ebay auctions.

The quality of tube amps tend to be much more subject to the quality of their parts, and the parts themselves are not cheap.  The low parts count common among tube amps (relative to solid state) tend to make the inadequacies in any part choices more noticeable. Good output transformers (for non-OTL amps) built to precise tolerances can cost hundreds of dollars apiece.

I think I misled by saying "point", implying there's a clear, obvious dollar value above which tubed amps bench very well and below which they don't. That's not true and it's not what I meant. The audio signal chain is not a series of discrete units acting in isolation on raw data. They're reactive devices reacting to other reactive devices. Tube amp designers can meet lower price points if they narrow their design goals -- the Bottlehead Crack, as mentioned, is optimal for the HD 650, and the Elekit TU-882 was tuned using the K240 and K701. Tube rolling can also compensate or optimize a particular build for the system it's a part of. A decent typical $400 solid state amp, though, is expected to be more versatile and less dependent on the specifications of the components attached to it. As the budget goes up (assuming the amp maker applies that budget to the efforts of design and construction and parts complement) the tube amp ought to be less limited in its capabilities.

Thanks for your additional clarifications, much appreciated.

I could also build you the Crack. wink.gif

The Parrot Zik (unpowred, which was the only way I was able to hear them just now) are incredibly bad. Not as terrible as the Klipsch M40, which are the worst headphones I've tried in an airport, but getting there. The place had an ad for the Momentum, but none in stock.

I kind of wish the Flat-4's (all I brought with me this time around) isolated better, but I can still enjoy them when they don't. Their bass just gets diminished. Pretty sure I'm getting a good seal because they sound right when I'm not on a plane.

Bioshock Infinite sounds kind of retarded from impressions I've been reading elsewhere and that kind of makes me want to dl it more when I get back home.

I saw a woman earlier who looked just like a younger Laura Dern.

Well, looks like my next major purchase will be the Crack.

Heard one with HD650 and then looked to see how much cotton was stuffed between the driver and my ear. Surprised to find none. Really bad, IMO.

41) Bottlehead Nagra Reel to Reel, Bottlehead Crack, Sennheiser HD650
Muffled, very veiled. Laid back to an extreme. Stage is very | | Center is virtually non existent. Don't care for this at all.

Shortest of all my auditions. I'd heard HD650 before and wasn't impressed, but I think this setup was worse. Nothing positive to say at all.

42) Bottlehead Nagra Reel to Reel, Bottlehead Crack, AKG K701
Changing to the K701 doesn't change much except being less veiled and cleaner. Still | | shaped. No center.

Better, but not by much. Also have never been a fan of the K701and this setup sounded similar, not really worse, than when I had heard them before.

I guess I listened with a K701 too. I'd forgotten that.

Wow, haven't heard that one before. Maybe it's a preference thing? 0.o

Interesting findings Max. So many other people who own the HD650 have commented they really like the Crack paired with the HD650 although I have also run across some posts from people commenting the so called Sennheiser veil sounded the worst with the Crack pairing so you're far from alone with your findings. Personally, I'm guessing the Crack isn't the best choice with the Senneheiser HD650 mid range but I've never heard the pairing so I can't comment on it. By the way, I did some listening on the HD650 with the Asgard 2/Bifrost combo and really didn't hear any veil in the HD650 mids and really liked the pairing with the HD650, HE500 M-100, and LCD 2. I commented on the lack of veil in the mids to the owner and he said in his opinion the HD650 only became veiled with bad amp pairings. He seemed to really like the Schiit pairing of the Asgard 2 and especially seemed to like my buddies Nuforce gear with other headphones he had.

Since I've steered the topic onto the Asgard 2 Jason of Schiit Audio is fast becoming my hero with the off the wall humor he employs. The Asgard writeup is an awesome read that made me grin. For those who can't be bothered to read the whole page the following is what stood out and made me smile when I read it.

But I hear all amps sound the same!
That’s cool. We think you can get a good deal on a headphone amp from Amazon for like $39. Or just use your receiver outputs and save even more money.

Very smooth way of telling the trolls to get lost. Delicious is what I thought when I read the above quote lol.
