Trying the loaned Senn IE800 now...really nice.Too much bass but great dynamics. And I love the looks / build. They would be better around 600 USD though...any thoughts ?

re: mixtape, I haven't had time to add all the videos in the playlist, and the talk of arranging it to be more mixtape-y made me procrastinate on it some more. It's in my sig if you want to have a look at the posts, but the playlist is incomplete.

I just fell in love with my Q701 for the first time last night.  I was listening to someone called Sara K.  Has anyone here heard of her?  That - more than any other Q701 listening session - is what I expected to hear when I first got them.  Was doing FLAC > HeadStreamer > O2 > Q701 btw.  Yes, I know I was double-amping, but the HeadStreamer didn't have enough oomph on it's own.

Also, don't know how often y'all get Happy Meals at McDonald's... but the container that they put the fries in has got to be one of the cutest things I've seen in a long time.

Ok among the IE800, Togo 334 and Kaede loaned headphones, my crush so far falls on the Kaede.

How did I know you were gonna say that lol? I had a feeling they were gonna be more to your liking. Especially if you enjoy the 1Plus2 that is for sure. Which do you like second the IE800 or the 334? You mentioned the IE800 has too much bass? Is it more bassy than the Kaede and 334?

You're not alone in thinking BAs sound unnatural: it's one of the main complaints you'll encounter about them. I'm wondering if it's the bass region primarily that sounds unnatural to you, as this seems to be a sore spot for BAs for a lot of folks. Perhaps the IE80 is distracting you from that with sheer bass quantity?

Anyway, the crossover thing is interesting to me because I was thinking the other day about liking single driver BAs like the FI-BA-SS and F111 because they sound so "pulled together." I'm thinking crossovers could be at least in part responsible for something sounding unnatural if the various regions aren't integrated too well.

If you want to go the multiple driver route, you may want to also consider hybrids: they tend to use a dynamic driver for the bass and BAs for mids and highs. So in theory you get the strengths of both worlds, provided it's implemented correctly. I tend to be of the mind that the more ingredients you have, the more chances you have to screwing up something.

Second comes the 334, even if at this stage I find them a little bit too dark  and warm in the mids. But I will listen to them more. At this price I expected perfection and that is not it...but still much genius in them though. The IE800 comes 3rd because even if it does everything very well, the bass is TOO OBVIOUSLY boosted.

I think it's more to it than just the bass although bass is generally a soar point for BA in general. The timbre is also another contributor as well as the speed of the IEMs themselves (prat).

Yeah, I know a lot of folks say that BAs sound "artificial" or something. When I said people find them unnatural I sort of meant it in an all inclusive sense. Asked about bass as a specific possibility because if he thinks the IE80s don't sound artificial I don't think it's a timbre issue myself.

Really though this stuff ("unnatural," "not musical," "artificial") is pretty vague and personal. I myself think it's more an implementation thing than a problem inherent with BAs, as I can think of plenty of dynamics that sound just as weird or unnatural---if not moreso---than many BAs.

PRaT... ugh. Right up there with "wire with gain." Don't get me started on that. I think that's more of a BS issue than a BA issue. LOL.

lol but you know what I mean. BAs are really fast almost unnaturally so in comparison to dynamic IEMs. Although as you said it also depends on how they are implemented (some BAs like the 8A and 334 aren't the fastest of the lot). The Flat 4 is super fast for a dynamic and in that its a bit hard to believe it's a dynamic IEM.... Not saying I think the prat is a bad thing either. I really do enjoy that aspect of BAs as well. Just depends on the situation :P.

From the perspective of someone who's been to various countries from Japan to Mexico to India, China was nothing like I expected.

The main difference is the way people treat you. In most countries people see Americans and act incredibly hospitable and kind. Whether or not they actually like us is another story, but they at least act that way. China is a whole different beast... it's a man eat dog world (I didn't eat any, but I did see it being sold) and the Americans are the dogs. In markets, they price things 10x higher unless you threaten to leave the store. Taxis drive in circles to build up their meter and get you to pay more. Pickpockets are everywhere and tourist attractions have multiple layers of tickets that you don't realize you have to pay for until you get to them.

On the other hand, you could view it as a challenge. Welcome to China, prepare to be screwed. Unless you screw them back, and in a sense you earn a little respect from the locals when you can.

Their clubs kinda suck though. People in China can't dance yet. Maybe in 5 years I'll go back and check on the scene.

Meanwhile, on the topic of Beats. I went to China with 60-70 other students from my university. Since I was in China, Beats seemed to be the "electronic gadget" (if you can call headphones gadgets) to buy within my group. Being as into headphones as I am, I was surprised when I realized I never had really given Beats a listen. In the end I did end up trying them but had to control myself not to be too critical at the risk of sounding like an elitist prick.

On the other hand, I think some of my friends were surprised to hear that Beats weren't as good as they were hyped up to be and I let them try my IEMs to compare. We started comparing IEMs (apple pods, my iems, various other ones people had) and we actually had a good time. While they didn't necessarily share my interest or care that Beats were worse, I think they were receptive to the fact that I was passionate about the subject. I've been struggling to figure out a balance between the me I present to the world and the "other" me, which includes all my interest in audio. As I grow up more, I notice that the gap between the two seems to get smaller and smaller.

It made me realize how little I incorporate audio into my social world. I'm considering starting an audio or headphone club at my uni but I don't know if I'm the right person for the job -- I'm pretty inexperienced as is.
