Lol. I feel like in Kiteki's absence I will inevitably fill that void. (Or at least, that aspect anyway). No I haven't tried them. I had a pair of Sony earbuds that use a similar mechanism, but they are kidney shaped and do not fasten. I found them actually incredible great for sport. The only reason I don't use them is because I don't like the sound. That's dumb I know.

The one thing I generally can't fault Sony for is they know how to make a comfortable headphone / IEM.

Oh.... so that's why!  LOL, I was wondering why you didn't use the EX600 as back-up IEMs to your EX1000.  So that's why.  Their cloistered away like Manchu emperors, never to see the light of the world.

Yes sometimes I rest in my hyperbaric chamber and that is when I open the little hatch and listen to the EX1000's. But only very briefly, for a couple of seconds, because I feel them crumbling away like ashes!

Seriously though they are a pre-loved used pair I got for a good deal on the FS forum. I love looking at them and holding them; they are like fine pieces of intricate functional jewellery. It's Sony's industrial design at its best. I really end up falling over myself for their stuff because of how strong the brand was when I was a kid, and whenever we got a piece of gear from Sony I would fawn over it.

ATTENTION: Giant Sony Rant Coming Up Attack for Massive Damage

I think where it all started going sort of pear-shaped in my mind was the SecuROM fiasco, the insane hubris of the PS3 launch, and just daily use of my minidisc player with SonicStage which made me want to curl up and shrivel away.

So I've developed a kind of stockholm syndrome relationship with Sony where I feel hopelessly abused time and time by their missteps - but it only upsets me because, you know, I care. :P

It's like the MDR-1R with the slightly loose detachable cable jack. I mean - cmon! Design one of the best looking headphones in the world, you make it sound great, and this one thing - ONE THING - you get wrong. It's not like Sony has not designed a secure mechanism for a detachable cable in the past. The Z1000 feels absolutely fantastic with the screw in jack. Even just a twist / lock would be good.

Or like this PS4 launch, where one feature of the new console stood out to me as distinctly Sony, or perhaps distinctly Japanese: since the PS3 handled background tasks so abysmally, they've included a completely separate processor in the console to do background processing.

BECAUSE YOU KNOW. BAD MULTITASKING CODE? JUST LIKE, PUT SOME MORE CHIPS IN THERE!!!

That is literally how I imagine Sony engineers came up with such a stupid concept. One of them is tinkering away on a PS4 prototype and eating a packet of crisps and has a brain fart, losing the ability to differentiate the two.

If we followed that logic for PC's by now we'd have Central Processing Units and Graphics Processing Units and Sound Processing Units and Mouse Cursor Processing Units and Error Message Processing Units and so on.

Sony, you were the company that praised massive parallel processing with the PS3's SPE's and tried to shove it down developers throats (good job on the SDK there boys and girls). Just eat some of your own dogfood and learn to write proper code instead of jury rigging clumsy hardware solutions for goodness sakes.

I think Sony's biggest downfall is being a company that is woefully bad at designing software in a world where hardware has become increasingly commoditised and software / UX is paramount.

@Warren I've tried the S65. It's kind of crap sadly. Sucked out mids, loose bass, weird assume treble is what I remember. Probably that's just the disappointment talking though since the concept is very well done it's near insane that not many more bigger companies do this.

But clearly headphones are one species. You just need one girl headphone and one boy headphone.

Hey, I kid you a little because I was the same way for a long time.  One of my favorite possessions during my youth was this thing.  I realize how ancient that thing looks, but you need to understand that it was truly bad ass in it's day.  I loved that thing in all the ways that a thing could be loved.  When it died, I tried telling myself it was in a better place, which of course wasn't true.

Dammit.  Sony probably has a patent on the mechanism.  Why can't they just put in some better drivers?  mad.gif  Thanks for the heads up!

It's the XBA-1 driver. It's possible that the waterproofing membrane messes horribly with the sound?

I am suddenly struck by the recollection that an old car we used to have had a Motorola carphone.

What the. How did that thing even work? What did we get it for? How did the sales pitch go? How much did it cost?! I never remember using it.

Oh dear God yes... I have never heard a good pair of water-resistant headphones.  It's almost like product developers forget that a material that impedes the flow of liquids will also impede the flow of gases.  Also, and let's be honest here, most consumers wouldn't know what good sound is.

I'll bet you anything that the cost of using it was so prohibitively expensive, that it just never went used.  My dad had one of those.  Never used it.  It's sole function was simply to exist.

It's after 4 in the morning and I haven't slept a single minute yet. I feel tired and I want to sleep but every time I try I wind up tossing and turning in bed. This does not bode well for this coming mornings work day. Thus far it didn't bode we'll for my wallet. I was so bored I decided to surf around on my phone and wound up on a certain online storefront and threw even more bones down on a new piece of gear.
New thread contest!!!! Whoever guesses correctly what I just bought gets a 1000 internetz and a date with MuppetFace. In case Mupps happens to be the one who guesses correctly she gets... I don't know...a date with Sandra Bullock?? Now that I think about it maybe I'll keep the date with Sandra Bullock and instead I'll send Warren or Lee dressed up like a drag queen. Man I need sleep I'm really starting to become delusional.
