The diary entries of a little girl in her 30s! ~ Part 2 - Page 515

I'm using a powder that I don't have much data on. I have to rely on a computer simulation to tell me what pressures will develop in the barrel, but it's a rough approximation at best. I'm starting out mild, so I don't expect trouble. Keep my fingers crossed just in case!

If this were a song I would enter it as my mixtape entry:

Yeah, same here.  Hope it works out well.

Okay, so as some of you may know, I work in the consumer electronics industry.  From time to time, that involves evaluating new products, particularly those from foreign brands seeking entry into the North American market.

Yesterday, I received three IEMs to test out.  These are from a Singaporean brand named Gavio.  The three units I received are as follows:

Their mission statement says that they want to be "a globally recognized lifestyle-centric brand that houses a winning team of passionate individuals who breathes life into our creations."  Naturally, I cringe at those words.  But hey, a job is a job, and it pays the bills.  Let's do this.

The Gavio Gruuve Gazz

I happen to have the orange one, but I would assume that the other colors are equally atrocious.  Before we get to the sound impressions, let's talk about the materials and build.  While I appreciate nostalgia and a longing for days passed, I cannot concur with shooting for Soviet era standards.  For example, the rubberized coating on the cabling is unusually thin, and I can spot all kinds of weird stains underneath it.

I'm not going to get very detailed with the SQ impressions here.  Doing so will only take this post to a bad, bad place.  I'll simply say that the airlines of the world have a new unit to give away on flights.  I do appreciate the nice tin that it comes in.  But since that's all it's got going for it, this unit leaves much to be desired.

Attention IEM/earphone manufacturers:  You should all get a few pairs of these to have on hand as a reference.  If you ever make something that sounds like this, you'll know that you've failed.

Gavio Gruuve Luxz

These are marketed as high fidelity earphones.  Clearly, Gavio is a brand with a rather sadistic sense of humor.

These are strangely shouty throughout the entire midrange, with rather poor extension going both ways.  I get the distinct sense that there's an odd peak in the 1kHz to 2kHz region.  If someone told me that these use surplus transducers from mono Bluetooth earpieces, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

At the same time, they manage to sound incredibly dead and lifeless.  It's almost like these IEMs wanted to suck really bad, but in the end they couldn't even muster up the will to do that with gusto.  Someday - far off in the future - when the music finally dies, these will be the official IEMs of that cataclysm.

Oh, and they are NOT hi-fi.

Gavio Metallon Ai2

Now we get to the Monster Jamz look-a-likes.  I'm sure you can see where this is headed.  But here's a surprise, it doesn't suck!  Well, it doesn't suck as bad.

The bass is the most anemic I've ever heard in an IEM (with BAs inclusive in that statement).  The mids are definitely forward, though somewhat grainy and congested at times.  Put together, that's not entirely bad depending on what genres you enjoy.

But the real tragedies here are the upper mids and highs.  That entire range sounds like a series of harsh peaks.  Not fun.  Of the three, this is the most listenable of the bunch.  But if you've read the above, you'll know that this is not saying a whole lot in its favor.

So, that's about it.  Obviously, I will not be recommending any of these to anyone.

No, I know, far from it.  I'm just doing a little good-natured teasing as Sony just happens to be very well represented in the initial batch of vids.  Totally messing around.  smile.gif

Nope! I am clueless.

Lol, I'm sensitive about being called a fanboy because, you know, I want to avoid looking like a fanboy who makes youtube videos. Though, that seems to work for some people. :3

Oh, well I certainly didn't mean to imply that at all.  And for the record, I don't see you as a fanboy, at least not in terms of evaluation product.  Maybe a bit in terms of where you might personally spend money, but that's about it.  smile.gif

When I get home from work I usually like to keep tabs on the thread and chat up all you beautiful people but tonight this little DigitalFreak is rocking out. I best get my arse in gear and start ripping. It's about time I finally got the real CD's and got rid of all the low bit crap. gs1000.gif

Either as a lyrical theme, an actual structural feature of the song, or both. Be creative. It can be an interesting rhythmic pattern, lyrics about the seasons, falling into the same situations, obsessions, etc.

The late Harry Nilsson's The Coconut Song.

The song is based around a single chord (C7). The guitar picking in the first measure repeats throughout the entire song.

Whoo! I got accepted to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute! Only one more college admission decision to wait on before I can decide where I'm going to school.

When I hear the Coconut Song, I think of Reservoir Dogs...

Thanks you guys. I also received an estimate of my financial aid package. Between the school and the government, I'll probably receive $40,000+ in aid. In addition to that, I receive tuition benefits from Whitman College because my mother works there as a custodian. So, my education will be free, or close to it. I may have a few thousand dollars of loans to pay off after I graduate, but that's nothing compared to the quarter million dollars that will be payed by others over four years. And, if I win a couple of the scholarship awards I'm applying for, then I may not need to take those loans and instead take only grants and awards.

I'll make my final decision after receiving my admission decision from Rice University and seeing what their financial package will look like. Either way, I'll be getting a very good education. I'm getting really excited about it.

Welp, time to flex my anime songs brain-muscles and find one then.

I suggest #diarymixtape or #mixtape for easy searching later on (when the Head-Fi search behaves though)
