The diary entries of a little girl in her 30s! ~ Part 2 - Page 507

Guys, according to the latest tracking my 4A's supposedly entered my city at 6 PM  and are awaiting to be cleared for something or other. Maybe I will have my CIEM's tomorrow?

Since it's already the 8th in some parts of the world, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a thoughtful and happy Women's Day.

Warning: A somewhat "political" topic ahead! (Click to show)

The theme this year is to raise awareness of violence against women.  The YWCA reports that a staggering 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime.  These are our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, and friends that we're talking about here.  I think you'll all agree that the above is a horrifying statistic - especially in this day and age.  Anyway, just wanted to bring a little awareness of the day, and to encourage any kind of positive action that you feel like taking.  Cheers everyone!

So, how is everyone else's day today.  It's cold and wet here in Southern California.  And though I'll never look at free water from the sky as I would a gift horse in the mouth, it's still been dreary.

I really do not care for the vertical inputs and outputs, especially with wooden construction. It makes me think of console televisions. Old, out of style, less functional pieces of gear that I would never own even if it sounded amazing. I guess there's a market for everything, but these are complete turn offs for me.

It's a particular kind of vintage appeal. Some of the working bits on the outside of the box, and then the general appearance is made more complex to imply that there's even more going on outside. Top-mounted sockets I can take or leave; I kind of appreciate knowing I can jam a plug in and not push the amp back when I do it, but I'm not overly thrilled by the idea of having my hand an inch away from a glowing hot 300B tube when I do it.

But it's a functional esthetic, a way of saying, "We could make a bigger box to contain it all, but this small box allows you to appreciate the beautiful hardware that allows you to listen to music." I'm on board with that. It's a valid design approach.

I have some real vintage amps. They also look very fussy and cluttered, but with a different sort of functional esthetic: During the early days of stereo audio there were a half-dozen competing recording EQ standards (RIAA eventually won out) and the amp had to be configurable to support mono, stereo, and home theater systems in a readily switchable way. Also, since it was still an early era, the electronics designers hadn't been able to figure out what's necessary for good audio and what isn't, so they threw everything in. The result is knobs all over the place -- but the tubes and wires are all tucked neatly behind the fascia. We tend to see them with the tubes and transformers exposed, but the amps of the period were designed to be enclosed; either in standalone cases or embedded in wall panels or furniture consoles.

So it has the same kind of retrofuturistic complexity, but by different means.

The main issue I have with Decware's amps are not the case designs generally, but the wood trim specifically; the elaborately carved mouldings distract from the already busy top plate and, I don't know how to put it, make the designer's statement in the piece something more like a mixed message. The Decware amps with the simpler squared-off sides always looked much nicer to me.

This guy's delivery is just. Incredible.

I was hoping you would like/fear it as much as I do. It's like the uncanny valley in reverse, isn't it?

Oh no no no no no, don't do that!  Why do you think we import all our water?  We get water quality reports every once in a while.  IIRC, they found some cryptosporidium a couple of years back.  Freaked the eff out of everybody.

Well yes, because "short time span" is a context that is known and relevant only to you right?  smile.gif

I would have liked to think that violence against women is not so much a political issue as, well, an issue! Thanks for raising awareness :)

Today I am writing a draft of a research proposal that I should have written some time ago. The weather could be good outside, or not. At this point my awareness is starting to shrink down towards a single point of panic.

I like that analogy. I always love inversions.

In one of my readings I'm reading about a religious movement that emerged in colonial Ghana in which people would, among other things,  put on pith hats and go into trances, imitating colonial authorities in semi-mocking, semi-cargo cultish attempts to extract their power. There's a old and controversial film about it.

I cannot imagine what is going through this Dominoes executive's mind as he tries to emulate the energy and excitement of such a thing.
