The diary entries of a little girl in her 30s! ~ Part 2 - Page 448

Man, this thread's been moving quickly and I don't know who half its peeps are anymore.

I've spent most of the day playing Earthbound, which has been nice.  I never played the game long enough before to really appreciate some of its finer qualities.  I'd chock that up to my previous attempts being with emulators on laptops, whereas this time I'm playing on the actual hardware (well, the game itself is coming off a flashcart, but still).  Dealing with the actual SNES and a TV gets a lot of distractions out of the way.

-Edit-

Also, now that I'm playing it on a ssytem with some bass, I can confidently say that the game's soundtrack does pretty much everytinig a great game soundtrack should, effortlessly -- it's wonderful.

I've been making headphone review youtube videos lately (I fell in with a bad crowd and felt pressured to do it). It's a way I can hopefully get some people interested in some of the more fun aspects of the hobby as well as get information out there about some flaws of some of these products that never really seem to get mentioned.

The youtube channel is here but I only really like the most recent videos when I've a) figured out how to get consistently decent lighting b) learnt to stop trying to do the entire review in one take c) learnt to stop scratching my nose or something in the middle of takes d) relaxed a little more

Eventually I want to go through all the stuff I have and like. It would be nice to see the SA5000 get a little more love and the T50RP get a little more recognition...

I've subscribed my friend. Feel free to watch my very lame silent comparison between my V-Moda M-100/MM-80 and me playing around with my Studio-V. Be advised it was filmed with my iPhone and I'm moving the headphones around with only one hand.so please be forgiving of the mediocre video quality.

Thoughts about the XB800 video:

Nice review very to the point.

Love the speakers (what are those anyway)

Great video quality (what cam are you using an how did you get such great lighting)

Love the hair.

I'm shocked you didn't have a stronger Ozzie accent.

Back when I was a lurker 2-3 years ago, I searched around the 70x series a lot and about akg. I remember people saying that ever since Harmon took over AKG, it hasn't been able to make new phones but was rather geared towards marketing. They said that they took out the k1000- but I'm guessing that's wrong? K1000, why you no still around frown.gif

For those interested, Heir Audio continues to bolster it's product line by adding yet another IEM. This one, according to Sorenslim, sounds like a less refined 8A which delivers a good 90-95% of the 8A's capabilities at a lower price. According to The Wizard because the 8A couldn't be engineered into a IEM he decided to blow the dust off an old forgotten project and set to work and came up with the 5 driver 5A. Pricing has not been announced yet and the new IEM currently is still not available for order.

                          Heir Audio 5A IEM

If that wasn't enough The Wizard earlier today made a further announcement concerning Heir's IEM line

Heir audio announcement:

A while back, I got an e-mail from a fellow Head Fi member, the e-mail stated  (I paraphrase)

Hello Wizard,

I work in the (X) industry, and I have a team of people working with me, and we think we can assist you.

Thus a new shell was born.  The original hand carved IEM shells were impressive in the fact they were hand carved, but they certainly had their own set of issues. One side may be slightly bigger, smaller, longer ear tip burm taller on one side thatn the other.

Our fellow Head Fi freind drafted some new shells, and had them printed on an SLA machine, and by doing so, the shells now comform with each other.   They currently are still hand poured, but they are itentical.

Now our IEMs represent a "home grown" colaborative effort from Head Fi members.

Thanks so much for your help!

I can't help but think Dr Moulton aka The Wizard is having a ton of fun on head-fi posting pictures of his creations for the community to see.

Here's the latest pic of The Wizards handy work. Some lucky head-fier is about to be the rage of the Heir Head clan.

Now if only my 4A's would finally get shipped I would be one happy head-fier

Meh. I dislike heir even though I've never heard their product line before. Just their marketing in general irks me. I mean, who uses freight shipping and then claims that its overall cheaper for all customers because it helps some customers have cheaper shipping at the cost of others absorbing that extra cost... There's really no reason not to use epacket shipping.

Also having a customer, "wizard" design for $300 extra or whatever is just plain ridiculous. I don't know any of the details about it but it just seems greedy and caters to lazy people who can't spend the time to properly create their own design or want something because its exclusive.

That's just my opinion though. The actual product could be wonderful but I doubt I'll ever buy from heir because of my dislike of their marketing.

I think that's the very reason why it's expensive. It's definitely a premium service that takes extra time for the staff/ the wizard himself. It's too expensive for the rest of us but I think it fills in a niche. At least they provide that sort of service. If you really feel it's too expensive just spend the extra 5 minutes configuring your own.

That's where I first ran across you. You were the one on the Heir thread asking about their shipping practices. With all due respect show me a company who claims it isn't greedy and are in it for the sheer joy of giving to the world and I'll show you the biggest bold faced liars you've ever laid your eyes on. As for the lazy part, check out some of The Wizards older posts before he founded Heir Audio and you'll see for yourself the guy has a talent for designing some pretty crazy and intricate looking gear. Give them time young dude they're a young company. Rome wasn't built in a day and I'm sure as time goes on their shipping and pricing will improve. Personally I don't like receiving stuff from UPS due to their crazy priced custom clearing fees but hey that's the way it is. Their sales have been pretty great ( 40% off the 4A and 20% off the 8A) compared to other CIEM companies and supposedly their customer service has been top tier. People who have had problems with fit order changes etc have promptly had their concerns addressed with no questions asked and have all said on thread that they were totally happy concerning how they were treated and how their problems were addressed. If you've been on here anywhere near as long as I have you know as well as I do that's a rather rare thing to hear. Just my view of coarse to each their own. If I ever get a pair of Heir IEM's I'm sending them on tour and you will be the first person on the list lol. biggrin.gif

It's not entirely mute. you coughed near the end. I like the cough. I also like that google identified the song playing from the headphones.

The speakers are Aktimate Mini's. They are like iPod speakers that can be hooked up to a computer / DAC as well. They are thumpingly awesome... a birthday present from a long time ago. They are honestly a little big for desktop monitors; hopefully when I move out this year they will get to do more party duties as they rightfully deserve!

The camera is a Sony NEX F3, but the video really just looks great because of the good lighting. I recently got one of these neat ring lights off eBay. These can cost over a thousand dollars so I thought it was a great investment. I found out it had a US plug but luckily I have a transformer from an old Sega Dreamcast (another birthday present lol). I may do a video just about the ring light one day since it's so awesome.

Since the light is circular, it casts a very diffuse amount of light and doesn't produce harsh shadows. But you can get the same effect with a window and closed blinds or on a cloudy day. It's just harder to control.

As for my accent, for some reason I have less of an Australian accent than my sister who spent less time growing up here. I think it's probably growing up watching a lot of foreign TV (BBC and Nickelodeon).

But um. Why is it shocking?

I really like the word wuss. It's a word that has a sound which aligns nicely with it's meaning. I wonder what the etymology is...

Etymology

1982, from earlier wussy (circa 1960), probably a blend of wimp and p****.

But I thought the latter word was a term of endearment at one point... or is this just a falsehood I learnt from Arrested Development?

I just dislike the fact that their pricing is so deceiving as you have to pay $55 shipping and then ~$40 more. Customs from China to the US can easily be avoided, its not like its the UK. And I don't understand why they insist on freight shipping, when any other method is much cheaper. I also was extremely confused as to why their explanation for the high price of shipping was so that some customers absorb the costs of what other customers would have had as shipping.

This is me penny pinching though, I just believe some of their marketing strategies to be flawed, and obviously I'm in the minority as they are pretty popular.

The whole thing with the wizard design was arbitrary I'll admit, I'm sure there are plenty of people with a lack of artistic ability that would like to have an awesome design and would pay a premium for it, and I can't fault them for that. It in fact the took me 4/5 revisions of random things and about 4 months of research and design to create my own customs.
