My review will be up in the coming weeks...just want to test tralucent silver gold cable. But if you like balanced sound with details, great bass texture and lot of airy space...the Miracle is for you. Very different from your 8a I think though...

For everyone who's unfamiliar with it, a group of us over on the anime thread got together and designed an amp/DAC combo that has very good performance for the money. We used a CS8416/CS4398 DAC set, along with an O2 amp with OPA2134 opamps, along with a custom designed control board that distributes power, manages the gain, provides muting for power on/off noise, as well as allowing the ability for the DAC to be output straight to RCA connectors, and the O2 to receive signals from a likewise pair of RCAs on the back of the unit. All for less than $200 shipped in a case that I was able to model on CAD software, and then design all the holes that needed to be cut out and such. I also designed the lettering on the front and back of the unit.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Thanks for B1o2r3i4s5 for doing all of the actual building of the units and custom control board, and pretty much everything else!

Now that's a gorgeous DIY amp if I ever saw one. If I had known you guys were doing a group build I would have been PMing you begging you to let me join so I could get one of my own. So how does it sound and is there any chance of there being a second group build?

Another gorgeous looking piece of gear. Mind if I ask where you got the artwork from or was it offered on site?

You kids have all the cool looking toys.

Yep indeed the 8A is very different approach but it isn't as bass heavy as I thought it would be. The bass is rather well controlled and the signature in total is very non-offensive. The 1Plus2s on the other hand are what you described above but really push the limits I feel.

Wow this heatsink I ordered upon recommendation really does the trick for the DACport LX. Surely it will last a lot longer than it would otherwise.... I mean it's barely even warm now when generally its just slightly cooler than molten lava ;).

Thanks! biggrin.gif I designed the graphics and placed the buttons where they are and such in 3D modeling software.

It was less of a group buy and more of B1o2r3i4s5 buying 10 sets of PCBs and cases, and us paying him for the cost of materials and him assembling them out of the kindness of his heart. He also designed a completely custom circuit that mutes everything when the unit is being turned on and off, along with doing a lot of other things. Because of the fact he didn't receive any money off of them, he won't be making any more. Just these 10 probably took him days to assemble in total. Basically all out of the kindness of his heart. We did each end up donating a bit to him as a token of our appreciation, but that was different from the actual payment, and they varied.

As for how it sounds, it uses a CS8416/CS4398 DAC that has a couple quirks, but sounds quite good. Compared to the E07k I'd been driving my Mad Dogs with for the past few weeks, and an iPod/O2 standalone unit before that, the bass seems to be more textured and punchy. The treble also seems to be a bit better than the E07k. Other than that, I need some more time with this unit, and a few more things to compare it to in order to say any more. Luckily, A/Bing DACs is really easy with the optional amp in RCA connectors on the back of the unit, and the switch on the controller board that changes whether the amp receives signal from an internal DAC or external DAC.

Thanks for the heads up on that.  I never had one, which explains why I didn't remember.  biggrin.gif

UCSD would be good for you I think.  IIRC, as recently as few years ago, they had a slight preference for international students.  And all of the people I talked to - that went there of course - felt that they received a top notch education.  It's also in a VERY nice area (if you like sun and scuba diving and such things).

Flat4 it is then.  Wait, the Kaede or the Sui?  I ask because you listed both.  I'm guessing the Kaede since autumnholy is pretty clear on the Sui being noticeably V-shaped.

Like the Flat4, the PFE 232 has a certain quality to it that really appeals to me, something you typically find on really high end IEMs. It's a... "cerebral" quality, a sense of delicacy and finesse. That's what I'm always on about when I say something has inner depth. The mids on the IE800 have it too, especially when paired with the UHA-6S. Same with the FI-BA-SS.

I'll have to experience it myself to know what you mean.  But if you're indicating an understated sense of refinement, I think that would appeal to me.  I'm not a terribly big fan of anything that gets right in my face (especially for the sake of doing so) - which probably explains why certain popular cans 'round these parts have never caught on with me.

These are more like full-sized headphones in the way they present music. It's like one brand of cognac versus another... both are good, just different. I tend to prefer the cerebral ones (but the TG 334 is kind of on the border line for me).

TBH, I'm curious about the K3003 simply from a price vs. performance standpoint.  At that price, a universal would seem a pretty hard sell vs. simply going custom.

I would have loved to hear an RE-600.  But if it wasn't ready, it wasn't ready right?  Something tells me that Jude probably has one though.  If so, I'll have to pick his brain for impressions.

For me, the most noticeable difference between the Slim I have and the Elite I had is that my new one is black.  rolleyes.gif  Save your money, so not worth the upgrade.  And should it die before the 720 comes out, just towel trick it for a few months.

1. UCSD - Location, Location, La Jolla! tongue_smile.gif

2. Cafe side - It's in the numbers! I gotta hit several to find decent vibe, service and quality out the bunch. I miss Lulu's Cafe (Santa Monica Blvd & Sawtelle) a lot! I'm gonna check out the new ownership/space later this spring. After all, we fixin' to be neighbors again! Looking forward to treating you...

I'm potential considering attempting to get another degree, perhaps one in electrical engineering? It would be rather silly as it wouldn't have any correlation with my current major but at the rate I'm going I'm going to graduate in like 2 1/2 - 3 years, whilst I still have 4 total years of college paid for. Seems kind of a waste to not take advantage of it. The other option would be for me to major in Chinese, since its my family's native tongue and I am HORRENDOUS at reading and writing. My understanding of euphemisms of any sort is bloody awful as well. The only problem is that Chinese is allegedly one of the most time consuming classes to take. Also I don't know if I can meet all the prerequisites for a lot of the classes to be able to finish the major by graduation. I guess its time to schedule an appointment with my advisor.

It's been a few moons (2001) since I studied Mandarin I. I hope to resume...by starting over someday and this time staying with it.

I miss the cove!  Just don't mess with the carnivorous squirrels there.  Saw a pack of squirrels there hunting for birds once, and one of them made a kill.  eek.gif  Not a joke.

Oh no, I'm treatin' you bro!  Haven't been to cafe in ages actually.  Wonder if Coral Tree is still around?  Also, The Talking Stick moved a little closer.  Now on Lincoln instead of Ocean Park (and they now have live music seven days a week).

Well I'm already enrolled as a pharmacy major.. I'm just trying to fill the extra time I have left with some classes of interest in me. I'll most likely just take up a minor or something; the one that stuck me as most interesting was primarily nuclear engineering, but I don't really have any idea what it's about, just that it sounds interesting. It's a bit disappointing that you have to be an electrical engineer to be able to access the audio engineering minor at my school, but I suppose it does make sense. It would also be nice if there was a minor for EE, just so I could get some moderate understanding of the subject matter.

EDIT: And jgray wants to see the world; I doubt Ohio is on the top of is list of places he wants to see ha.

That is sooo very s-e-x-y...

I just bookmarked it in case there's some spare audio change in the tea tin marked, well..."Audio." regular_smile%20.gif Fish/Shrimp would be the first thing I'd try.

@warren thanks for the advice. I have no qualm with the sun as long as it's not humid like in Malaysia.

@silent i dont get it.

@numbers, as long as I'm there already I can roam around during semester breaks.

Yuck high humidity with short bouts of rain and sun is just a disaster.....

I'm not too keen on warm weather at all. Not too cold either. When you walk outside in a sweater in the spring, that's when it's perfect. Not too cold, not too hot, just perfect.
