Now that I have a box full of iPod Video parts and an agenda, I'm contemplating building an ultimate DIY-mod and being done with that particular path of upgrades. Especially now that tiny 256GB mSATA SSDs can be had in the sub-$200 range, making them cheaper than PATA 128 GB SSDs were last fall.

If I decide to upgrade from that for source hardware, it'll probably be an Android minipad, assuming any have both decent digital-out and can get >500 GB drives hacked into them.

I'm rather tempted myself, I've always wondered about Decware and the funky look of their tube amps has always appealed to me. From the description given by the designer Steve Deckert the sound will be as close to tubey as possible. The price isn't half bad I guess and the amp comes with a lifetime warranty and claims to have 50 hrs of battery life. You guys think this could be a diamond in the rough that slipped by all of head-fi?

Started my draft of LCD-2 vs HD800 tonight. This is going to take a while....

First of all, sorry for bringing up old topics.  Just trying to catch up after a few very busy days.

Umm, speaking of which - do you want to ask her for permission or shall I?  I nominate - and second - you.  Okay, you win.

Let's hope err'body wants to participate all day err'day. I guess that should be it. All that's needed now is for you to make up a theme and off we go.

Wait, these are going to daily?  Not to dull the enthusiasm, but that quite a commitment we're putting on Mupps dontcha think?

Has it been decided yet?  Last I heard, it was a notion.  Don't know if serious plans are in the works yet.

Her big thing is sticking everything into her mouth, because of the teething thing, so whatever she can grab is usually soggy; remotes, phones, dog/cat toys, shoes, puppy ears, etc.. She has a ton of teething rings, but she'd rather throw those at the dog.

Teething rings are the closest things she's got to an Aerobie.  smile.gif

Here's to hoping you don't have any crazy expensive power/audio cables.  Might want to invest in some bitter apple if you do.

If it gets pushed back to be a launch title for the Xbox 720, Ima be pissed.  I honestly think we've waited long enough.

When I used to drink a lot of coffee, I would get massive caffeine withdrawal headaches.  It was serious enough that I'd keep drinking large quantities of coffee just to keep from getting the headaches.  So I can kind of see where their reluctance to quitting might be a real concern for them.  Still yuck in my book though.

YES!!!  smile.gif

I think it depends on what exactly you want to study.  Some schools are better for some things than others.  So you'll probably want to find the best schools for exactly what you want, and then work your way down the list based on quality, affordability, proximity to Head-Fi members/meets, and other such important criteria.

BTW, what would you be studying?

It's condition is spectacular. There's not even a scratch on the cups and the pads are pristine. Even the headband still has a lot of spring and life in it.

Now to get myself an adapter so I can hook her up to Raven and Itoru. I tried plugging in these headphones to my folks old mid 90's cheapo Goldstar 5 CD carousel mini stereo system that's down in the basement. To my utter shock it drove the K240 with authority and it sounded pretty decent for a cheapo Goldstar stereo.

May I ask what's so special with the AKG Sextetts like the K240, K250, K340? I know they're vintage and very hard to come by and one is a very interesting electrostat and dynamic hybrid design, do they have a very unique sound that till this day remain extremely good against newer ones?

Roger roger.

Hey Mupps, do you have a rolling list of your favorite IEMs posted anywhere?  Something like a high end or summit-fiems list?

I'm interested in knowing what would be on such a list.  I'm sure jgray would be as well.  And heck, it'd just be a good general resource for the world-at-large.

I suppose one could always look at Clie's or joker's threads, but those aren't exactly tailored to people looking for something a bit less commonly available.

In any case, if you do have such a list posted somewhere, I'd appreciate a glance at it.  Thanks in advance either way.  smile.gif

The idea was weekly or monthly ... not daily.

Ah, you're referring to the "all day errday"? Basically it was a pretty short lived meme back in the day.

Totally missed that (due to meme ignorance redface.gif).  Yup, it scared me for a sec, because daily would be kinda tough.

Funnily enough my card is limited to $300 max online spending just for cases like this...
You could say that I'm in the aviation engineering majoring in automatic and intelligent control systems, from a rough translation.

Woah. That's mighty responsible of you. Just curious, (here atleast in the US), most people don't pursue a degree after undergraduate in engineering as they can get good jobs that scale VERY well. Why are you pursuing a further education (if its not to personal to ask)?

Not bad. Very peppery and fresh tasting since all the peppers came from our back yard. Despite how it sounds, I've had hotter Thai curries. I'm prone to sinus headaches and migraines and sharply hot food helps mitigate them, but even without that excuse I like hot spices on their own merit.

Congratulations on a good find.

How are the ear cup elastics? Those are usually dead by now.

The K340 was never sold in Sextett configuration, although the K140 and one or two other models were.

I think the appeal mostly comes from the esoteric technology and the age. They have a nice timbre and decent tonal balance and the details are soft compared to current headphones. This makes it very forgiving of source material and upstream components, and if you're lucky with the version you get the net result can be a lush, velvety sound that makes listening very easy.

IEMs are a lot harder for me to classify as "summit-fi" or not, because price plays even less of a factor in determining quality than with full-sized headphones in my experience. Here's what I've listened to over the last few months...

My personal favorites:

Final Audio Design FI-BA-SS

Final Audio Design Heaven VI

FitEar TO GO! 334

Ocharaku Flat4 KAEDE

Ocharaku Flat4 SUI

Sennheiser IE800

Other stuff I like well enough:

AKG K3003

Audio-Technica CKW1000ANV

FitEar F111

JVC HA-FXT80

Phonak Audeo PFE 232

Sony MDR-EX700SL

Sony MDR-EX800ST

Stax SR-001

Stax SR-002 (a bit disappointing honestly -- the portable amp ruins it).

TDK BA200

Ultimate Ears UE900

VSONIC GR07 Bass Edition (not that diff. from the "normal" version...)

Stuff I really don't like:

Audio-Technica CKM1000 (the wood housing is better in almost every way)

JVC HA-FXZ200 (probably the worst new IEM I've tried in a long time)

Stuff I'm still kind of unsure about:

Heir Audio Tzar 350 (technically very impressive, but not that enjoyable)

Fair enough. You should probably attempt to find a good uni in a lively location then.
