The diary entries of a little girl in her 30s! ~ Part 2 - Page 310

I'd share one of my more erotic dreams, but you wouldn't like it and I'd be banned for one reason or another, I'm sure.

Anywho, since PC building has been such a thing here lately: I helped a friend of mine build one in a lower end Corsair case yesterday and it was the easiest build I've ever done.  The standoffs were built into the case and everything just fit like it was supposed to.  It's not the quietest thing on the world, but it's far from loud and some of the fans actually had what looked to be silicone mounts to absorb vibrations.  I'll edit the model number in later; too lazy to look now and that friend's at work.

3d printed records.

Maybe someday record lathes will become obsolete for reasons unrelated to the popularity of LPs.

Thats pretty cool, I could imagine it might make concerns over durability a thing of the past.

So I was corresponding with JPS Labs about their Abyss headphones, and I asked if they'd consider letting me preview them before their official launch. They said no, that they wont be offering any previews, along with something about availability being limited from filling distributor orders. The tone of their response was kinda nervy.

I can't help but feel like they're really overestimating demand for these. It seems they expect people to buy them without first endearing themselves to the community, something that is absolutely crucial for a newcomer. Especially given their ludicrous asking price of $5k which puts them right up against the current halo product, the SR-009, they really need to do more to prove they aren't just trying to milk gullible audiophiles. Basically, it's a rather small and close-knit niche market that will make or break them.

Was really tempted to write back saying "Well good luck. You'll need it."

I think I have a better understanding of the way JPS is operating now however, and TBH my interest in the Abyss is sinking fast. I'm sick of companies like this.

For something that uncomfortable looking, don't waste your money unless you want it as a collector's piece. Even then, I'm sure there would be more interesting pieces to obtain.

Also about the 3D printing, I would collect vinyl exclusively if it was produced like that. There are only a few reasons I haven't collected much. It's expensive, but Kickstarter and other companies are making good, affordable turntables now. But the big issue to me is the degredation. Trust me, I have been eyeing a purchase of the limited edition green copy of Sleep's Holy Mountain, but I just can't justify spending that money on what my mind feels is a consumable.

But holy s***, is it rad.

That's cool but amuses me with its redundancy the same way that LP releases of electronic music does. I guess we could start making archives of things on 3D printers.

I can see a problem though, the 3d printers I was using at uni only had like 0.1mm resolution, I doubt this would be adequate, in fact I wonder what kind of resolution of scanning and printing machinery would be needed for faithful reproduction.

:/ man, way to shoot down a potential customer that could potentialy shoot down more potential customers... tbh, I've never heard about them outside of this thread. They only offer up cables, but everyone's got cardas, double helix, moon audio, etc. Also agree on the being stuck-up or gung ho. I seriously doubt anyone is going to buy those phones. just look at them. 5k without any impressions or hearing is pretty risky.

Just checked the abyss page, and they're labeled as "the worlds finest headphones". That's pretty bold for 5k up against the R10, Orpheus, and 009

Years ago, I saw a turntable that used lasers instead of needles to read the grooves on the LP's. Produced no wear whatsoever. Don't know whatever became of it, though.

I just took the plunge on some HD800's. I hope it's as wonderful with the Zana Deux as folks around here say it is. 'Cuz I'm gonna be poor for quite some time to come thanks to them. And, why is it that folks that sell expensive gear use the absolute slooooowest shipping method there is--UPS Ground--to ship it? I expect more for that kind of money.

UPS Ground tends to be pretty fast for me.

That said, I got my HD800's via Amazon prime.  It took 2 days.

Sometimes you can't help but just sit back with a huge bag of popcorn and patiently wait for the next runaway train wreck. You know it's going to be ugly but as hard as you try you just cannot look away. The Denon fiasco was an entertaining time and now we have JPS Labs coming down the tracks looking to outdo Denon. Anyone want some of my popcorn? You all might as well be comfortable and munching popcorn when the festivities begin. I think when those crazy priced headphones are finally released we're all going to have to tolerate the fan boys (all three of them cool.gif) running around all over the boards screaming at the STAX, Qualia and Orpheus crowd. Oh well, nothing else left to do except kick back and watch the circus.
