This reminds me of DF's story of him vs. the world an Apple Genius. It is your story, right DF?

Yep that was me. I wonder if Hipster Apple Dude and his girlfriend Buffy The Vampire Slayer ever got around to checking out better sounding IEM's or as they like to call them buds.rolleyes.gif

It's kind of ironic you bought that story up. With this new update the new connector is going to make it a lot harder to amp an iPod which means iDevices may be no longer looked on as a good DAP for mobile audio rigging. Hipster Apple Dude must be rolling around on his living room floor laughing at me right now.

Apple is one of those companies that really doesn't care what you *want* - they believe they know what you *need*. I suppose that can be good & bad - I do think it's a lost cause to try to chase the whim of the consumer market - you want to be the one steering the market, not the one being steered by the market. On the other hand, most companies like Apple take this too far and start believing their own BS. When they really start believing they know better than their customers, that's when they run the risk of completely missing the target, and if their arrogance continues to prevent them from seeing how badly they have missed, they will keep trying to push the wrong ideas. That's pretty much how I feel about QuickTime, the ipod dock connector (old or new) and some of the other technology that they just won't let die. Put a dang micro-USB port on it and be done with it already!

+1

Like I said before, I honestly feel that it's quite unfortunate the thread's rebirth coincided with Apple's announcement. But hey, at least it still have some connection with this hobby; namely what the new pin would affect the aftermarket devices (barely any discussion LOL), and that weird looking new earpod, which I'm genuinely interested in. And a few other stuff. ;P

That's up in the air right now. Some sites are saying audio out won't work even with the adapter while others are claiming devices will work as long as the adapter is used. Only when the new phone is released will anyone know for certain.

So far 10 out of 20 pages of this thread have been consumed by Apple discussion. : P

Whoops, sorry about that MF I'll shut up for the time being about Apple

OTOH there are some drawbacks that can't be fixed as easily as the firmware.  I think it's actually too small.  My fingers are almost too big to use it and all the clicking you have to do to build playlists starts to make my hand cramp up if I try to do it one handed.  I also have to wonder what they were smoking when they decided to leave off a hold switch.  The OF uses the power button on the Zip's top to toggle hold on and off which easy to use and easily defeated by chance.  Rockbox uses two of the buttons pressed simultanously to toggle it.  That sond like it wouldn't work well either but the fact that getting the timing right on purpose is quite fiddly solves that problem and creates another.

I haven't seen a DAP that wasn't full of silly problems like those since the Rio Karma so the Zip looks like a keeper to me since it has the least number of them that I'm aware of.

It's a nice little unit with Rockbox. I use mine mainly as an on-the-go player, clipped to my shirt pocket for easy access (and no hold required when it is there), and the size is ideal for that. Around the house, I generally stick to the larger devices.  Value for the money is unbeatable.....it's not the pinnacle of audio, but a worthy addition to one's collection of DAP's for sure.

It really amazes me how many ear/headphone brands there are. There just seems to be way more than the market really needs. I'm not complaining - but it just seems odd to me - a huge number of them are just cheap junk, but even when you get above the Walmart cash register display, there still seems to be far more brands and models than even this huge market can support.

I went to Buy.com, to the headphone category, and clicked on the list of brands:

Maybe lots of them are just under 1 parent brand? That would make more sense than each one of them being independent startups/ companies.

I'm not really interested in a collection.  Maybe a separate one for just podcasts but that's it.  Anything else you'd recommend instead?

Depends on your planned usage patterns, I'd say....and if you require custom EQ capability, extended battery life, etc.

I had a 4th-gen 32GB Touch for a year and a half, and I enjoyed that a lot....both for loading my tunes on it, or using Pandora or Digitally Imported when I was in wifi range. I never tried the line-out from it, but the headphone-out was decent, and there are several good EQ apps available if you need one. I traded it away after getting one of the Samsung Galaxy players with the 5" screen, and after using that I couldn't go back to the 3.5" Touch.

That said, the Galaxy is a step down in sound...... it has fantastic battery life, though the wifi reception is also a step down from the Touch. It's big enough that it stays home, and if I'm not watching a video in bed with it, then I mostly use it plugged into either my Sony ghetto blaster or my old stereo, running the aforementioned Pandora or DI apps.

If I am just relaxing and strictly listening to music I own, I use an iPod Classic--LOD--FiiO E11....it's basically my desktop rig, since I am not exactly flush with cash....lol.   If I am listening to music in the background as I am doing other things around the house, then my phone is what I use the most....I have a 32GB card in it and of course I have those same two streaming apps on it. On the road, when I want to preserve the phone's battery in case I actually need to use it as a phone, or do some emailing/texting, the Zip comes into play.

I've also had Sony and Cowon players, but I haven't had any of the more eclectic ones that you read about in this forum, that the general public are unaware of.

I just rambled on there a bit, I realize.....but perhaps I can be more specific with a recommendation with a better idea of when and how you'd be using a player, what kind of files you would want to use on it, etc.

Sylverant, my friend, the Coldplay performance that has been catching my attention lately is their own version of the beastie boys "you gotta fight ...".

It may have been a bad choice of song for obvious reasons, but I think they performed and transformed it brilliantly to a Coldplay version. I'm sure you've heard it already, but yeah, I like what they did to it.

Speaking of music, I got the recommendation that the XX new album would be really good. I haven't heard it yet, have any of you guys heard it?

So one of my favorite bands, The Avett Brothers, released a new album this last Tuesday.

I was a little disappointed by the album because it is a step away from their roots, I suppose. The Avetts are known to be particularly raw in their folk/bluegrass roots and I derived great pleasure from that rawness. Sadly, their latest album has strong signs of a cleaner, more produced sound. Or something along those lines, so to speak, you could say, yadda yadda.

Listen for yourself.

VS

Doesn't the second feel so much more... genuine?

Or am I just being dumb and not accepting that a bands sound will change?

The part that bugs me the most is that I actually like the songs. Just not the way they're mixed. The instruments are pushed to the back, the voices to the front. Harmonization is tuned to be perfectly balanced, instruments are mixed to sound perfectly cohesive, electric-type sounds are being introduced rather than their old acoustic sound...

Get off my lawn music producers!

Clever marketing I guess. I'm mostly curious what kind of battery life that rockboxed iPod gets.

IIRC, that member has a history of marketing this way. It is a proven method of getting views, at least for a predominately male internet forum.
