I don't know, a stranger showed them to me and then I bought the fakes from China.  There were different versions of them and I remember at one point only 200 were made in Japan 'by hand' and then it was moved to China.

So what you're implying is that all of this (hobby) are Pokemon and we need to catch them all? I like the sound of that.

My newest goal in this hobby is to find a Qualia minidisc player and accompanying earphones in as close to like-new condition as possible.

Part of me is amused by the conceit of statement-level in-ears that cost $200... At the time I would have considered the price mind-boggling, too.

Yes, just imagine they are singing earphone... I-ya-hon (イヤホン) instead of Po-ke-mon...

Then again "pocket monster" would be a pretty good name for DAP's, which never made sense to me as a name anyway?  DAP?

1. I waited five months for this set. I'd hope that a replacement wouldn't take nearly as long now that production seems to be somewhat steady. Still, the thought of more waiting is irksome, and now that the holiday season is here, shipping will be sluggish.

2. The previously referenced user who returned his set reported getting a replacement that sounded worse than his previous set overall. "Lifeless" is how he basically described it. This is very disconcerting, as I really (*really*) like the way these things sound. I'd hate to get something that sounded different due to manufacturing inconsistency.

3. Having spoken to some folks, it seems these issues were present to varying degrees in the original Floats. The design of the new QA variant seems to actually be more similar than dissimilar in this regard. Thus it seems these issues arise from in inherent design flaw. Which means the problem could happen again with the replacement set.

I'm willing to contend with this stuff, as I'm really enamored with these stupid headphones. I'm just not sure as to the best way to proceed at the moment. I guess I'm still naively holding out hope for the issues resolving themselves, which is most likely *not* going to happen.

This kind of stuff is really unacceptable. I can't think of a parallel market where manufacturers are treated so well by customers in light of awful design flaws. Regardless of how awesome these sound, to me this would be completely utterly no good.

I just can't see how you could ever overlook this point.  I mean, if it were a rare unit that was thoroughly out of production, then I could understand a grudging acceptance, mainly due to lack of an alternative.  But there is simply no reason why you should have to endure this.  In fact, I'm not entirely sure you could - even if you wanted to.  Bit like playing headphone revolver every time you want a session.

I have never been very convincing in telling myself that, whether it was a pair of headphones or not.  And neither I, nor you, nor anyone for that matter, should ever have to.

Would you be willing to acquire another pair without returning your current unit?  At least that way, if the second unit is indeed lifeless, you would have both units on hand in order to make the best personal decision as to which you would rather live with (if any at all)?
