IMHO the decline began After 1990, when McIntosh was purchased by Clarion. Now that they are owned by the Italians, it's all over - they are just a brand. It won't be long before they are slapping the McIntosh label on handbags, sunglasses and raincoats.

Here's something you can do with your speakers while you use your IEMs.

just drank a 40 of Stella Artois and a Four Loko (the new lame version, unfortunately).

Driver 8's 2013 Year in Review

(I'm going off a vague memory of the questions MF posted as I can't find them atm.  If need be I'll find them later and edit apropriate responses into this post.)

Before I begin I'd like to generally characterize 2013 as being a bad year for me as far as this hobby is concerned.  I got Debrox stuck in my left eustachian tube and I'm still feeling the effects of it despite popping my ears several times per day as per my audiologists' orders.  It would be one thing If I was listening to metal music loud as **** for an extended period of time, but I wasn't -- I've always been anal about protecting my hearing to the point of using ear plugs in movie theatres, but I've still incurred problems by virtue of being a genetically asymmetrical person (as my father is as well) and using an over the counter product supplied by Westone.  It's unjust and it sucks and it's horribly depressing and has turned me off of a beloved hobby for much of this year.

ANYWAYS:

Product I've Been Most Impressed With

Probably dbel84's mod of my LCD3's: initially I had mixed thoughts about these, but realized they're actually quite a good listen when using good playback software, while sort of off-puitting otherwise.  I have no idea how this works, but it just does.  Like, seriously, I wind up loving these things when I optimize my listening experience, but regret the mods when I don't...

Product I've Been Least Impressed With

The Eddie Current Electra.  I thought I'd absolutely love this thing since the Balancing Act is still my favorite amp of all time (especially now since I've got a Tung Sol round plate driver tube), but it sounded anorexically thin with my SR009's (the only headphone i purchaed in 2013, btw).  This is probably due to the silver capacitor upgrade I got, but I wish Craig would have tested this upgrade with other stats (which I'm sure he could somehow borrow, at the very least) and warned against synergy issues.  Several months back I said the Electra -> SR009 combo made me want to hold my breath and I still stand by that.  Just... *******,  The build quality of mine was pretty amateur in some regards as well eventhough the metal polish was beautiful enough to make me question selling it*.

*The guy I sold it to is using SR007's and I've been lead to believe the amp's synergy with those is better, so I hope he's been having a good time.

Where I Think the industry is Going

iuno.  Probably ridiculously overpriced junk coupled with consumer grade stuff a la Beats I'll never care about.  Hifiman's efforts are refreshing, though, even if they're kinda ugly.

Other Stuff

I acquired MF's Liquid Lightning MKI a few months ago.  It's probably not what i'd consider my ideal stat setup, and I actually agree with all the grumpy members that it's a bit slow*, but it's colorations do well to negate the SR009's obvious flaws, the likes of which I feel are made evident in not too much time to anyone who winds up owning them (except MH).  With that in mind I feel kind of bad for members who swear by them based on meet impressions, but am sure that a very, very good rig can be made out of them with proper synergy.  I may look into getting an LLMKII sometime later in the year, but not until I get other things together.

* Amusingly enough, Cavalli's improvements for the MKII seem to be things the folk were suggesting. w/e, though.

About Me (again):

I've been more obsessed with source material stuff this year than anything else since I know it will be worthwhile in any setup I settle upon.  A perverse part of me loves spending large amounts of money on 1% performance increases on the PC end.

Dream Post (since I've been asked to post them here and feel better doing that myself):

I had a dream a few nights ago wherein I was intuitively cast into a void.  I was content with this until a skeletal spectre presented me with my son -- a boy so naive he wasn't alarmed by a skeletal hand brushing through his hair.

I couldn't be taxed any longer so my son was to pay for my sins by wearing parasitic flesh over his face and male pattern baldness areas and walking several thousand miles.  As I watched the boy walk past rows of judges with this flesh over his face I realized I had never taught him a word.  Years later I'd stalk him with all the grace, intelligence, and self awareness of a cat.

The good old man knows from experience.

I would rate Krell over McIntosh.

So I know no one cares about the K701 anymore, but I found this post from 2006 funny:

Quote:
I have a pair and have done some extensive A/B tests between the SENN HD 600 and SENN HD650 and find the AKGs to be
1. The brightest of the bunch (those who think that the 701 and hd600 are close they arent!)
2. Must turn volume WAY up to get to the same sound levels as the SENNS (I used a SPL from radio shack)
3. They dont have the detail that the SENNs do, not even in the higher frequencies.
4. The soundstage is close but not quite there.
5. MIDRANGE DOES NOT EXIST ( put on a copy of HYSTERIA and see (hear) what im talking about)
6. They are FASTER than the SENNS.
7. Makes almost everything sound as if RICK RUBIN produced it (think early SLAYER) - (BEES in a TIN CAN)
8. UNINVOLVING.

Guess what Rick Rubin is wearing in this video?

An open backed K702 for live performance DJing?/?

Am I alone in thinking those cans were worn just for show?

There's a good chance they were worn just for show, perhaps because they're white, and the color stands out. I just thought the post was amusingly prescient.

I'm thinking the same, but then again they probably look cooler than most of the closed ones. And it's really funny in context of Tom's quote from 2006.

It's funny allright, but how did you find it Tomscy2000? Out of your own memory? Searched for Rick Rubin and K701?

Yesterday when I was out photographing with a friend, I listened to his camera and said "1/60th second, right?", he responded "Yep" and then we laughed at the fact that I could tell by the sound of his shutter.

You better edit this post, or VE is going to lay Thor's Hammer on you, old man's wrath style, when they find it before you've had time to correct your video.

Done, the videos been pulled and removed from view on my channel. I even titled the video wrong. I'm such an idiot, I have to much gear rolling around in my head as well as private matters. Talk about a boner move, I feel so stupid right now.

LOL, don't feel like that. We're all human, and we all make mistakes. I'm sure no harm was done, and no offense was taken from any part anywhere. It's not stupid, it was a simple mistake my friend.
