The diary entries of a little girl in her 30s! ~ Part 2 - Page 1351

Well can't really recommend portable headphones since my days of public transport commuting has ended, and I just don't have lots of headphones, but the AT ES88 is pretty nice. It has kind of forward mids without too much compromised bass and treble, although maybe it could do with a bit more treble to my taste. Or was it bass? Isolation is okay, I guess, but the fit is finicky. But once you get that nailed down, it's one of the best fit for me considering I'm wearing one of those trendy wayfarer-style glasses.

Warren, I also have the T5p... actually in a love/hate thing with it. The "p" is for portable but they are actually a bit big and for some reason would still pick the Signature DJs and KEFs over the Beyers.

Oh, well that's unfortunate.  :(  So it's a reversal of the Momentum (a circumaural that's too small to go around the ear) in that it's a supraaural that's too big to fit on the ear?

Not exactly the most capable can out on the market but it's lasted almost 3 decades for a reason. Others to look into would be the Beyerdynamic DT1350 and the newly released T51p which is supposed to be a step up from the 1350.

I don't really mind the fit/size that much (for portable settings) as it is quite comfortable (not at all like the "over-ear" Momentums) but just the sound output... Bought them used, Blue Dragon cable installed, not sure if the cable makes a difference over stock or not (I'll never know...) but the highs are so inconsistent most times and bass is really tamed even compared to the Alpha Dogs...

So, I'm working on my top music list for 2013. Whew. So much good music this year.

Speaking of end-of-year stuff, I'd like to get diary members' thoughts regarding the hobby this year. That includes music, but it also means gear.

~> What were your favorite musical discoveries this year? Doesn't necessarily have to be released in 2013.

~> What was the best gear you tired this year? Again, it doesn't have to be new to this year so long as it's new to you. That includes headphones and earphones, but also DAPs, DACs, amps, etc.

~> Biggest head-fi disappointment?

~> Any other general reflections are welcome. For instance where do you see head-fi going next year, and what trends do you predict?

~> What are you goals related to music and / or gear? Saving up for something, or trying to downsize?

Hum there are so many...getting to really listen to Brian Eno, David Bowie, The Cocteau Twins and Lucio Batisti.

As for new stuff...new album from Laura Marling. Works from Kendrick Lamar and the rest of Black Hippy, Grimes, Rhye, Blue Hawaï, Fiona Apple, The Knife, Shuggie Otis, etc.

~> What was the best gear you tired this year? Again, it doesn't have to be new to this year so long as it's new to you. That includes headphones and earphones, but also DAPs, DACs, amps, etc.

Well mostly the stuff I kept. So SE5, NT6, 901, ZX1 and Tera Player.

~> Biggest head-fi disappointment?

I was quite disapointed with the AK120...not crazy about the sound sig. Otherwise the continental V3 was a hiss fest with iems...I did not know tube amps could be like this. The biggest disappointment was the UM 3DD. They sounded really nice but the finish and fit were horrible on the universals.

~> Any other general reflections are welcome. For instance where do you see head-fi going next year, and what trends do you predict?

The trend I see is that the competition is much more intensive so in each product category, new products are coming out increasingly fast. I mean within 18 months, iBasso, AK and Fiio put out 3 products each... that is huge...however, it might be slower on the CIEM front past the first quarter as all new flagships are out..but once again brands such as Fitear my surprise us and keep the game going.

It is going to be a year for innovation, as brands cannot continue the driver / price hike. A 18 driver / 3k$ CIEM will be too much. So I am waiting for new materials, digital prints, new types of drivers, new custom art options, etc.

~> What are you goals related to music and / or gear? Saving up for something, or trying to downsize?

My goal related to gear is to find my pace...will I just try to find a temporary end game and slow down on purchasing or go on a rampage and become a collector...there are 6 CIEMs, 1 or 2 universals and 3 or 4 DAPs I want...the jury is still out on how I will move forward in this hobby. What I would like is to attend at least one festival and grab bears with some headfi friends. I only met Gavin IRL so far...

Speaking of end-of-year stuff, I'd like to get diary members' thoughts regarding the hobby this year. That includes music, but it also means gear.

~> What were your favorite musical discoveries this year? Doesn't necessarily have to be released in 2013.

Weird Electronic music from less known artists namely ProleteR and Overwerk and JPop Namely Perfume....... (If that counts as Jpop)

~> What was the best gear you tired this year? Again, it doesn't have to be new to this year so long as it's new to you. That includes headphones and earphones, but also DAPs, DACs, amps, etc.

My PHA1, it may not be the best portable amp but it sure is capable and tough

~> Biggest head-fi disappointment? I'm disappointed at myself for somehow breaking my SE535 and at Australian Post (too some extent null audio) for subsequently making a cable that broke in 1month (and Australian Post for losing it? Might also be partly my fault though for not getting tracking XD)

~> Any other general reflections are welcome. For instance where do you see head-fi going next year, and what trends do you predict? Cheap amps and more expensive DAPs

~> What are you goals related to music and / or gear? Saving up for something, or trying to downsize? A reshell for the aforementioned SE535 ^^

Yup. I'm planning on having an article about it finished for Tom's blog in the next month or so.

The MH335DW is still the least fatiguing cIEM for me, and it's still tops for comfort due to the shallow fit. Slides in and stays put. My ear canals are really straight and narrow, so a lot of other cIEMs take some work to get seated just right.

For sound it's more apples and oranges, but as a whole package the MH335DW is still my favorite at the moment.
