The diary entries of a little girl in her 30s! ~ Part 2 - Page 92

A couple months ago we had a discussion about King Crimson in this thread, specifically someone mentioned their live albums. Right now I'm very curious about their live albums, but the long discography list on Wikipedia is a bit intimidating.
Can someone make a good suggestion? Single CD's only, please. I personally do not like my albums to pass the one hour mark.

I'm thinking something like 6-in/4-out with one out being a built in head amp, individual digital volume control and mute for each out, assign any in to any out and let them all run simultaneously unless a particular out is muted, assign one in to multiple outs simultaneously, balance control, switchable crossfeed on at least two of the outs, individual 16 character by 2 line LCD status displays for each out, and all functions controlled through both remote control and front panel buttons.

I'm also considering adding a mixer so that any two ins can be summed and fed to any one out.  That will probably need another display too.

This is in addition to the list of parts I've been putting together over the last week or so in order to prototype some tube circuits.

I must be certifiable.  In the bad way.

Let the speculation begin...

First off: ಠ_ಠ

That sounds interesting. Do you have an estimate of what all of that costs? I'm not seeing this as anything 'budget' though.

So Adult Swim / Toonami is doing something really annoying and turning their three hour block into a six hour block, thereby getting rid of the second airing of shows which I normally watch in the morning. Instead it's a single airing for everything, and they're adding in some crappy filler like Symbiotic Titan and the new Thundercats and acting like it's something awesome.

Which means I'm either going to have to get a DVR box / service or just download it and watch later.

Hmm... any tips on DVR stuff? I've got Dish Network, so should I just call them? I'd rather have more freedom to choose which recorder I want.

Supercar, a band I'm quite fond of that is a little difficult to pin down at times. I'm most fond of their more electronic side:

I was actually first introduced to these guys through Grant Morrison, who is a huge fan of theirs.

do consider Elgato Eye TV HD, and Slingboxes. I don't have experience with them, but I know people that swears by them

Assuming it's not a prank review (no shortage of those on Amazon), it's probably some poor kid who got picked on at school for not wearing Beats.

Kids will use any leverage they can when they want to bully. Just like there's no "safe" name you can give your child that won't be made fun of at school.

Here's something less complicated that does most of the job.

Supercar is great and we've got a couple of their albums at home. I don't listen to them too often because there is a kind of sameyness in their tone and mood, but I do like them a lot. First heard about them through my partner. I'm not sure where she learned about them.

If you get your DVR from Dish it will record the digital stream straight from the satellite.  So from a videophile perspective that's the best quality choice.  Though HD will look good even recorded as a secondary source.  Dish has really decent DVRs IMO.  (Full disclosure: Used to work for them in engineering; left in 2008; don't consider myself biased towards them, but could be.)

BTW, Slingbox has the same majority shareholder as Dish (Charlie Ergen), so though it is an alternate choice, from a financial perspective it's not really a competitor.

The volume control chips are $16 a piece.  There's $64 right there.  I'm going to make it expandable so I can turn some of them into balanced if need be which could be another $64 down the line.  I need lots of I/O so probably the Arduino Mega for about $50.  Four or 5 LCD screens with driver chips at about $13 each.  A bare O2 board for the amp section that I'll DIY so maybe another $30-$40.  Maybe $50 for an overkill multi secondary transformer so there's plenty of room for expandability, especially if I need to replace the O2 with something more powerful down the line.  A whole bunch vero board, resistors (at least I already have tons of good 1% metal film resistors), caps, diodes, opamps to buffer the seperate sections, probably some logic gates, and some small signal multiplexer chips to tie everything together.

I haven't looked at buttons or IR remote sensors yet.

It's not budget at all.

That sucks.  I mostly just download anything I want to watch.  About the only 'live' TV I watch anymore is news or random documentaries as 'filler' when I'm feeling bored and/or lazy.

So what does it take to beat the K550? According to Tyll, it's the UE6000/UE9000. http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/surprisingly-good-logitec-ue6000-and-ue9000

Yeah, Tyll mentioned taking the K550 off his wall of fame and that the UE6000 slays it, though he still thinks it's a decent headphone. Personally I think the K550 absolutely blows. But then you folks knew that.

Best case scenario, he's cool with it... and even takes advatange of it by being extra ornery in arguments because it looks like he's got a army behind him.  biggrin.gif

Worst case scenario, he changes it in an attempt to escape us.  But I'm committed to running him to the very ends of his avatar collection for the entire month if I have to.  There can be no escape!  tongue.gif
