Get Lucky is so damned catchy. Love that track. Can't wait for the album proper to drop

Anyway...

Dunno if any of you regs ventured out of the safety of this thread, but on the outside world, Soundearphones just threw us a bone with this Earsonics SM64 deal:

£200 is tempting, but I'm not really feeling an overwhelming need to get new IEMs right now, especially ones that would probably cost me an extra £47 in fees. I'd be all over them if I was in the US.

I so have to check the place out when I have some time on my hands to lounge around.

Will it be deserving of a DF thumbs up?  We shall have to wait and see!  smile.gif

I keep thinking she sounds a bit like Bjork, specially when she belts.

And her accent too, both quite reminiscent of Bjork.  So on one hand, I can't figure out what Bjork's songs mean.  OTOH, this song has no meaning.  Seems I just can't win.

I just checked the SM64 deal and I'm getting sold out on the site page

Darn. I so love a good sale. frown.gif

Lmao, if you guys get a chance you should all check out the blog The Audiophiles Wife, it's hilarious.

I couldn't help but think of MupperFace when I read the following blog entry

Quote:

Natural Woman

The Audiophile emailed me from the road this week with instructions to send some capacitors to a couple of people. This should have been easy enough, except one of the recipients seemed to be a woman. He gave me no information about this woman except her address, so I was forced to spend the better part of the day considering the following:

Are she-philes indigenous to Maryland? I don't know.
Are men ever named Colleen? Doubtful.
Rather than being an audiophile herself, is Colleen the best audio wife EVER? Maybe.
Are Duelund capacitors really the world's best? What?

I may never know the answers to these questions, but I performed my postal duties as assigned. Between that and ripping a good portion of The Audiophile's CD collection for him this week, I should be in second place, behind Colleen, for being nominated The Audiophile Wife of the Year.

And that, my friends, is audio winning.

One of these days I got to get myself on some of these online dating sites and find myself an audiophile girlfriend/wife. Any of you guys on this thread have a single sister whose looking for a husband and is into audio redface.gif

I've read this before (I think her husband, "The Audiophile" linked her on Audiogon a while back).  She's pretty funny.

It's amusing but seems almost like a ghost account lol.

Btw has anyone hear ever tried the Westone UM1?

SM64 now enroute to me. If I'm not smitten by them or find the Flat-4 more engaging, they will promptly be passed on to Digital_Freak, for he is the chosen one. I may make him grovel, I'm not sure yet.

Still, if I find myself liking the SM64, it certainly would throw a monkey wrench into my FIBASS plans. I'll have to find a way to get my mitts on that phone somehow or another. Marrow donation perhaps :l

Yes, I hated it. It was veiled and flat.

I believe that "harshness" and "thinness" of a signature were decided by local inflections between peaks and valleys of the FR --- how deep those seemingly asymptotic grooves are. The reason why the RE-400 "requires" deep insertion is that the assumption is absolute bandwidth desired, so the 400 needs to be inserted "deeper" into ear canal in order to minimize bandwidth loss, whereas the 0 just peaks higher in the upper frequencies, but the 400 seems to lose bandwidth in a much more "natural" manner, whereas the 0 jumps up and down from early on. Thus, I do believe the 400 is still a better earphone that's less harsh than the 0, as the impulse is cleaner, distortion is lower (on all orders), and time decay is cleaner as well (while still maintaining a natural sub-bass decay). This all points to a better transducer. You'll see that on the FR, the peaks/valleys are much less pronounced, so more "information" should be retained. The auditory system can't adjust to multiple thresholds within the same range of hair cells. There are only 3-4 groups of inner hair cells that are tuned tonotopically, but within each group, they synapse onto the same auditory ganglion cells. At any single time, your hair cells will transduce sonic energy translated from the basilar membrane (the tectorial membrane and basilar are a mechanically coupled system), but their thresholds are determined by the Potassium ion gradient across the stereocilia, as well as the theoretical "spring system" of the kinocilium. These factors modulate your hearing thresholds at any single time. Thus, it's never good to have a "peaks and valleys" response, as only those peaks will really register true signals, if the "valleys" are sub-threshold. The reason why we still hear a natural signal is that our auditory ganglia process the summated signal across the tonotopic map, and "renders" its own signal. It's hard to explain this part well without even more jargon, because integrative ganglionic maps are hard to explain through words. The point is that, for a maximum amount of information to be translated into what we hear, we need smooth response curve (+/- 12 dB thereabout) over a localized frequency range (on the order of ~3000 cycles/sec) to get a maximally resolving signal.

I decided to sleep over your wall of words, but tbh, still fail to adequately reply to it in the morning. So let me just say, I've seen FR graphs that had left and right channels of the same IEM less closely matched than the RE0 and RE-400 here, between 20Hz and 12kHz.

Anyway, if you're nonetheless confident that the RE-400 are worth a try for someone who didn't like the RE0, I'll just shut up and bow to the expert, no offense meant. smile_phones.gif

On the off chance both of you hate them there's a friendly little vanilla-filled confectionery two provinces over who happens to love all things french (except for the language)...

Am I lactose-intolerant or does ice cream just not sit well for me?

Because it's been a day since and I'm still stuck in bed...
