The diary entries of a little girl in her 30s! ~ Part 2 - Page 71

Yesterday I had my first session of math tutoring. I actually found the work quite fun.
It seemed like a good way to earn some extra money when I first thought of doing it, and my predictions turned out to be right on the mark. And the best part is that the pay is actually quite good, better than I could earn with e.g. working in the supermarket. Additionally my working hours are really flexible too.

I'm not particularly interested in smart phones, and I don't know much about the lay of the land so to speak, but the Meizu MX seems rather interesting.

There's an article about it on InnerFidelity.

I worked as a tutor all throughout college. It's fun, but watch for students who try to get you to do their homework for them. Also since I was directly affiliated with the university, there was a ton of red tape and procedural stuff that got really annoying really quickly.

Looks like an iphone copy. They better beware or Apple may sue their pants off ;).

It does looks interesting, but all the hardware race seems like an arms race to me. Not really interested since 2 years ago. Rather than sheer processing prowess, I'd like to see more battery improvements. That's a much better way to spend R&D on IMO.

What makes the Meizu so interesting to me is that it supports SPDIF output.

Yeah, I think it doesn't have a chance to appear on the list of US carriers.

Oh my. Well reading it again in earnest. Just skimmed it the first time.

While nice for audiophiles, it sounds like a pointless feature for 99% of the typical smartphone users.

I wouldn't use it myself either. I'm fine with using the TRS jack of my phone. Sure, it's sub-opmtimal, but so are my listening conditions. I mainly use my smartphone for listening either on my bike, or in the train/bus. Sometimes I use it while working, but usually I'm working together with others, in which case an IEM would hinder communication.

That sounds awesome but it looks like Meizu still needs some followthrough on the digital-out front:

Meizu hasn't quite finalized their plans for this adapter. For now I'm using an engineering sample of a breakout board

I'm not interested in integrated music player/phones yet, for a variety of reasons, but the MX seems more appealing to me than most of them.

This is Meizu's goal, in a way: With hundreds of smart phones on the market, there's room for companies to capitalize on niches without regard to how their product appeals to the general market. Google does this with their Nexus models, by providing phones that are optimized for hacking and user-managed OSes. Meizu seems to be going after the audio market now. I think it's great, and hope this trend can continue.

It's something audiophiles having been wanting in a device like this for a while now. Since Meizu used to make audio players primarily, it seems to be their target demographic. Or at least one of them. Apparently they're popular in China, and I'd imagine a good deal of the people buying these wouldn't necessarily take advantage of it, but it's definitely a nice option for those who do.

I have a feeling a lot of people don't use all the features that come with the devices they buy. Nothing new there.

Edit: Ardgedee beat me to it. : P

I had just assumed it was an Android device, but no, it uses an OS called Flyme. I'm not remotely familiar with it, but from that IF article: "it reminds me of a cross between the flexibility of Android and the polish of iOS, and I rather enjoy it. It runs smoothly and quickly and I experienced very few hiccups along the way."

I think it uses the same dac as the S3 it still runs android just a skin over it...... Nothing really interesting

I thought Flyme was a customized build of Android by Meizu.
