I'm new to this forum but I've been following this thread for a few months.

Now I've finally decided to get my first pair of CIEMs and Cosmic Ears appears to be the only company that sells them at an affordable price.

I havent got any response from CE so far but I thought it would be a good idea to get my ear-impressions in advance to speed up the whole process since I'm kind of impatient ;)

So today I had a talk with an audiologist (highly known company in Austria called Neuroth), and he told me that the impressions would shrink after one week to a point where one

cannot produce perfectly fitting ciems anymore. ( He uses a two component silicone material)

This surprised me a lot since I've read posts where people stated highly different time frames for impressions, ranging form 1 month to two years: http://www.head-fi.org/t/171310/will-my-custom-iem-mold-impressions-shrink-over-time

Does anyone of you guys have experiences with how long ear impressions are feasible to work with? If its really only one week this would make things a lot more complicated (and expensive: express mail service) than I thought.

cheers, Bratin

Hi

It's been a national holiday over there just recently, so it may be worth firing another email again today.  I had one unsolicited one from them this morning at 9:30.

Should be getting my ma1's back this week now as they just needed thickening up.  At last they should fit (even they have needed two trips, though as one was a driver failure I'm not counting that one!).  My tf10's are a slightly longer job but should be out by next week roughly but to save me from waiting Phil's going to be sending my ma's tomorrow.

Was just curious if anyone's actually using the prefit service?

Cheers

Thanks a lot for your responses! :)

I believe he is using this stuff http://www.gmedpro.com/50mlcartridgesystem.html

IMO my audiologist might be a bit too overcautious about the shrinkage... Anyways... Phil from CE responded to my mails and assured  me that he will cast my shells as soon as he receives the impressions. He also said that he has never heard of impressions not being any good after just one week, they even used a 12 month old pair which was still ok...

So I think it will be fine ;)

If this is your first pair of customs, you couldn't be in more safer hands.

Best of luck, and hope you don't need refits!  Which model have you decided to go for?

Cheers

It seems every time I get close to pulling the trigger on some Cosmic CIEMs something goes sour, product changes, missing cables. I'm in Sweden for another month, so I thought it would be a good time frame to get to the audiologist and get possibly some HY3 (or something cheaper), but I'm not so sure anymore :/ thoughts?

If you are in sweden have you tried emailing Phil to see if anything can be sorted out for you if you explain the situation?  If nothing else perhaps they can suggest an audiologist for you to use?

Cheers

EIther way much respect for your patience!  Even with my fit problems at least I've been getting stuff through.

Cheers

It's HY3s that I'm waiting for & when I ordered was under the impression that the drivers for them were available at the time. As it's turned out, I had an e-mail from Phil today saying that he hopes to get them sent out this week, but that it's turned out that the new cables are defective, so he's having to use the old cables.

Not ideal after waiting so long for the new cables, but at least I should have them reasonably soon.

If it's the old cables then they SHOULD be the westone variant and fine to use. Hopefully getting my ma's back this week beginning, next. As the fit was fine but just needed a simple thickening they should fit! Seems Phil and CE are having a bit of a rough time of it sadly. The ma2 drivers had to be changed due to a faulty batch, and now news of a faulty batch of cables. Seem's some people and company's can't catch a break right now. I'm sure it's as frustrating for Phil as it is for all of you waiting for your customs! Cheers

I too have been waiting a looong time for a ciem from Cosmic, but in fairness to Phil he never promised that they'd be quick, I've always promised to be patient, and I'm pretty sure he's only been taking orders for pieces he's certain that he'll have the raw materials for.

He certainly HAD the stock required to provide the HY3, as at least 3 of us ( I think ) here on HF have had/have them already.

It's a bummer if the cable issue is recurring, I was excited, like others I'm sure, to see what the new cables/plugs were like.

However I'm glad that Phil seems to be sticking to his standards, and refraining from supplying us with sub standard goods..

I'm betting that he's more disappointed than all of us put together!

Phil's informed me that the HY5 I've been waiting for is unlikely to be ready this year, so I'm going to have to decide whether to wait for it , or just go for a HY6, which is likely to be ready much quicker, but more expensive.

He's in the process of adding a dynamic driver to a reshell of my TF10's, which is a bit of a gamble, as I understand that it's more difficult to get a good result than designing a hybrid from scratch.

Phil attempted a 'hybridisation' to a TF10 for another Head-fier , but he found it too bass heavy for his tastes.
I'm happy to gamble though, as I'm a bit of a closet basshead, and I think Phil may have found a more suitable dynamic driver than the one he used before.

Receiving these might satisfy my anticipation enough that I can wait till the HY5 is ready sometime next year.

I really like the idea of hybrids, as there are qualities that I really want from both types of driver, that I've yet to experience in a product which doesn't use both types.

My HY3's sounded like they were going to satisfy my needs before they were smote to pieces, and I hope yours are to your tastes when you receive them.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that the cable drought resolves soon eh?

I am one of the HY3 owners you mention. Still my fav IEM by a mile cool.gif

I was also the experimental subject for the hybrid TF10 with the added dynamic driver. It was overpowering for me, and indeed I think it would be even for a basshead. It did add to the bass extension, where the TF10 was lacking, but it added a pile of mid-bass bloat that overpowered the TF10's already fairly recessed mids and also drowned out the TF10's sparkly treble.

I think that with perhaps the right sort of dynamic or crossover adjustment, it might be possible to improve the TF10's in the way that Phil has been trying to do. For me, all the TF10's require is a little bass extension for contemporary music and if Phil can pull that off, then it's a winner. Can I just say that his re-shelling of the TF10's even without any additional drivers, does improve them considerably, in that it makes them even more "TF10 like" - i.e. their normal tone and attributes become even more accentuated in Phil's shells.

I was talking to Phil earlier and the story is a bit more complicated. Isn't it always?

There are actually 2 cable suppliers he's working with. The first batch from one of the companies (I don't know any names) wasn't up to the level Phil wanted for his products so he sent it back as he himself wasn't happy with them and they are working on a new batch. The other cable company will be delivering the new design cables in about 6 to 8 weeks and those should be 100% good as it's the same company delivering the traditional design cables (3 into 4 wires) and they will now deliver the new design cables as well. The current/traditional design cables' quality however is excellent even if it's not the new design they're perfectly fine, these are not the original ones they were using but of a better quality than the originals. So the comment that CE is using old cables is not 100% correct, they are using current design style cables which are common on most custom monitors.

Can I just add that Phil is a fussy bugger, he likes things to be absolutely right, nothing less than that will do for him. You can rest assured that his current cables will be excellent quality as will any future ones he supplies. I'm not blowing smoke up his ass here, the guy is genuinely and passionately committed to delivering the best he can deliver.

Just curious, for those that already have a pair of CEs, did anyone receive an Otterbox with theirs?

No, Otterboxes (or something alike) will be optional in the future from what I understood. I bought myself a 1000-type on amazon in the mean time
