Request the HY3 in XB version.

Hi

Wonder if someone who owns a cosmic ears custom could actually do me a favour.  I'm trying to decide which model to go for right now (and at the mo I've been recommended the BA2) so if someone could have a quick listen to a couple of songs that are fairly standard of the sort of stuff I listen to and let me know what it's like then that would be appreciated.

Songs are :-

Magnum, all my bridges.

Landmarq Timeline

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw5_ABlAt2A

I do go heavier then that but not by much.  For me it has to have a melody.

Oh and if you check my avatar out the purple one is the cosmic ears one and the blue is my old failed tf10 reshell!

Cheers

Am I correct in thinking that if deep-fitting universals bother me, customs likely will too? Or, is the fit good enough that I won't experience the same pain/discomfort?

I'm sometimes bothered by some deep-fitting IEMs (like the Etymotic HF5 for the example), but I'm not bothered at all when wearing my customs (LEAR LCM-5). I believe that this might be a personal matter though, so I'm not sure if you'll feel as me.

There's nothing remotely heavy there, that would suggest you should be swayed towards one of the Hybrid offerings, and every reason, if that's your musical taste for you to go with the BA2 if that was Phil's recommendation to you. You will get the clarity and detail from the BA's that would benefit those musical styles and the obvious speed from BA's too. I can't hear anything in those two examples that would benefit from the extra bass reach of Phil's dynamic offerings. In my humble opinion ofc tongue.gif

I'm inclined to agree with this. My HY3 I forget are in my ears, and my Vsonic VC02 which require a deep insertion, I am always aware are there and leave me with sore ears after a few hours. I can have my HY3 in pretty much all day with no discomfort whatsoever.

That's the beauty of prog, It can be light like the two I linked and in the case of Magnum certainly can go that little bit heavier (more live then studio, granted). I also tend to mix that stuff with more traditionally accepted heavier stuff like Dream Theatre, Vanden Plas etc.

Cheers

when i reviewed the MA2 i was listening to a lot of dream weaver and similar stuff and these hit the spot. For those who have talked about extension these do very nicely, they just do not sound like they have subwoofers attached like some dynamics.

I am a Dream Theatre man myself, even if they do insist on spelling it "Theater" biggrin.gif

Personally, I find prog rock, classic rock and even metal, sound best with IEM's that do not overly emphasise bass. I accept that the V shaped "Rock" EQ is the accepted norm for these genres, but that rather depends on the content of them. For vocal heavy music, you need decent mids too.

Anyone using aftermarket cables with their CE's? I'm planning my next setup that are going to involve a set of HY5's, but for aesthetics (yeah, I'm vain like that tongue.gif ) I'm getting a few 3rd party cables, and I was wondering about the connectors. I'd shoot Phil an e-mail, but I rather he spend his time on getting everything set up fro the new product line launch instead of dealing with silly questions like this. Do CE us the same connector as UE/JH/Westone 0.78mm pins?

Yes, they do.

Agreed. The twin driver model is really satisfying - just a lovely tuning which works well for most music.

I'm the type who gets easily irritated by deeper insertion universals. I just can't wear them for more than 15 minutes without going crazy. Custom IEMs work perfectly for me.

Yep, same connection. The only potential issue would be if you get recessed sockets, which may not work with certain cables. But that's not really Cosmic Ears specific.

:) :) :(

:) - They've arrived, yay!

:) - The left fits (but then it usually does)

:( - Anyone guess what this means? :):P

Got in touch with Phil, and I remain as ever impressed with his willingness to go the extra mile.

Cheers

Getting my impressions tomorrow. I've had impressions before for custom hearing protection but not for ciems, I suppose it's the same. Anything I should really pay attention to?

From Cosmics site :-

When getting your ear impressions from an audiologist it is critical that you inform them that the impressions are for musicians custom in ear monitors. Below are the instructions you need to give them, they can also be download on the link at the end of the page, this will also include the address to send the ear impressions to.

Audiologist notes

We need a full ear impression for our customers, including the crus of the helix, tragus and aniti-tragus.

  1. The impressions must be taken past the second bend of the ear canal.
  2. The impressions must fill the whole ear.
  3. The impressions must be made with a high-viscosity silicone impression material.
  4. Cotton dams are preferred.
  5. An open mouth impression using a bite block is preferred.
