Thus the latest JVC have Carbon Nanotube diaphragms attached to the Neodymium magnets.

Well i called nfm this am to cancel my order. The internet sales is closed on the weekend but cajunky was nice enough to give me a different customer service line and i called. Turns out they shipped already and will arrive on wed.
If these cans do work out then i will reembark on modding the has500 into a full sized (closed). If not.... Guess a friend gets a free pair of phones.
It'll be fun i guess starting over with trying different pads etc...... Especially since by now i have more pads than Tampax Corp.
gotta make use of em somehow.

??? eh......... why are you trying to cancel your order, I am confused here. All the impressions on these S400s has been great. Why all of a sudden so much doubts/ people jumping ship just cuz it's selling for such a low price??? Color me confused, isn't that a good thing. LoLedit: it's cool to hear that you're still planning to mod for S500s, can't wait for more results/ experiments. Oh and yeah man those Philips Uptowns are crazy comfy, just tried them today, very nice indeed.

Damn these things sound goood. You guys are gonna love these!! JVC this year hasn't had a failure. That in of itself is an accomplishment. These things should not sound this good for this little..I like that it has a different signature from my HA-S500 with ATH- leathers. Musical, sparkly yet precise, thickness and depth to the mids and a nice bass end that is satisfactory. Nice extension and detail on both ends.. I can see many a guys liking this signature just as much as the HA-S500 or more so. The truth is. I love em both to no end.
You guys that are about to get these. You all gonna love the way these sound. Just stupid for the price..

Interesting. I am with Imswjm with this one. Much like the HA-S500 needs different pads to up the sound. These I feel need AKG/ATH pads. To my surprise I switched back to the stock pads and there is a bit of congestion happening as everything is a bit too forward.
The stock pad actually is muffling the sound. The mids are so pushed forward the it muffles on some vocal tracks with prominent vocals. The AKG pads have velours on the bottom end of the pleather pads. So half pleather where it touches your ears, and then velours in the bottom side.. My theory about having the bigger wider sound hole applies in most cases except for this one. Well the ATH leathers sound good too. But I was wondering why am I getting a more open and detailed sound from the AKG pads and the reasoning is not because of bigger wider sound hole, in this case it is because the bottom of the AKGs being velours actually help tune the sound for better clarity. Opens the sound. I left the AKG pads on for the overnight and day burn. I threw it on the Fire Phoenix and it sounded so damn good. Then I switched back to the stock pads. I immediately noticed the difference.
I know you guys be griping about possibly getting a pair a pads but the SQ difference is clearly evident. Once you hear better dynmics because of the pads and then you go back to stock that pushes the sound a bit too forward.. Ya ATH leathers or AKG LE518 pads. AKGs are bit loose fitting but worth it for the nice tune change..It goes from a warmed up sound to a refreshing one just with a pad change. Amazing.
Just tried the ATh velours. It has the same effect as the HA-S500. It flattens out the sound and gives them yet another signature. It sounds great too. Plus comfort. I can see many guys liking this sound. I noticed with velours on the HA-S400 does not sound as lively as it does on the HA-S500. I don't have to use extra foam to deaden the highs a tad. It sounds better on these than the HA-S500 actually.
While I give the ATH leathers the nod for the HA-S500. I think I am liking the AKGs on the HA-S400 much. The only draw back is. These feel the same as the stock pads so not much comfort to be gained. So there has to be a compromise. More comfort and almost as good is the ATH leathers. Some may prefer this more balanced sound. But the AKGs retain the musical tilt and warmth in the mids while throwing out greater detail of the drivers. But is not as comfy.

This is what I am really hoping for with the 400. To be able to use velour without harsh highs which is the problem I had with the 500. Way to harsh for me.post #326 of 118910/6/12 at 6:45pm- Dsnuts

Ya this was for many a guys it seems but once you bottle up those highs using a wider closed pad the ATH leathers. They sound like a million bucks and some change..Need more burn in, for now I am mighly impressed with these new headphones. Only if JVC could hear how these sound with these other pads on.Maybe that was a good thing as they have no clue how great these sound with these pads.. They would have to up the charge on these as it is some of the best sound quality for the bucks I have ever heard. Both of them sound absurdly great with all my sources but. Not so much with stock pads. That is a damn shame.. Easily bought online I would do it.If any of you guys are skeptical. Hear them for yourself with new pads. It will be worth the extra payed for certain. It makes a big difference what a proper pad can do for these phones..It goes from a decent musical sound to a mind blowing one. Of course I need to burn them in much more so. So all this is subject to change. But the only way I see it. If the SQ clarity and detail becomes better with stock it will also be that much better on the AKG pads.

you need to be a little more levelheaded about these things, a little more critical...

Sure..I am just telling it like I hear it. Nothing more nothing less. But that is just my style. No one believes a $25 headphone can sound great. That is against all force of nature. I will let the others hear them. Hope with some other pads and let them tell it like they hear it..Happy listening fellas.
I think the guys that already own the HA-S500 know the potential here. In Ghost's case a full month with these. Smiling every minute I bet. lol. I look forward to what you guys have to say about a cheapo.

Not at all. These actually sound great for hiphop but I would have to give the nod to the bigger drivers that are in the HA-S500 for hiphop..For 1/3rd the price of the HA-S500 however it makes it easier to get one of these instead and even get some pads in there and still save. Both do bass very well. The one aspect of carbon based drivers is their bass ability. Nothing lacking including bass..
