no prob with this, you can drive 600ohms headphones with this card. , but the amp in this is not the best for low impedance headphones..

No, it will work fine. Of course, it will be noticeably quieter than the ATH-M50 under the same conditions, but that is normal. At the higher gain settings, you will very likely still find the power more than enough, especially if you only used the default "64 Ω" mode with the ATH-M50.

250 ohm headphones will run fine with the Essence. It doesn't make justice to 600ohm headphones tho.

bump the price range up a hair and you could get the hd650's.  the xonar essence stx is a great "clean" source for your digital coax to a decent dac/amp.  crack/speedball combo seem to be best bang for the buck for the hd650.  just saying.  plus, the bass in the 650's, though not quite as much, come pretty close to the ath-m50's. (i own both)

 

if you can't afford the dac/amp, then you could just run it straight off of the card for now since it does have a built in amp.  then when you have the funds, get the dac/amp.  the 650's will grow with your source components.

 

just a thought.
