According to Sony Nordic, there's no gapless FLAC playback in Walkman F as of now. They make it sound like it might appear in an update, but no statements regarding that yet. Let's hope for Android 4.1 that, as you said, has native gapless playback.


My guess is that the Japanese F will have gapless for WAV and ATRAC. Looking forward to see if the apps will be in English, maybe I'll import then to get the 64 GB and NC.

but if the poweramp app, for $5 solves the problem, i won't worry about 4.1 version of android.  can anyone verify that poweramp on the WM f8xx does in fact do lossless flac?

Yep. I have a few full lossless Flac files on it, and poweramp played them just fine. Actually the stock player does as well, but I'm just not sure it does Flac and gapless.

that's good enough for me, gapless flac is all i need, so i ordered one from J&R and it will be here monday.

 

i also see that there is some sort of Kenwood android app that lets you control music players from the car dash unit via USB.

i think it just does control, not digital output to the Kenwood dac, but that would be pretty close to what i hoped to do with the ipod but never could since apple won't support flac or streaming from a firefly server.

Its android, like the Z, there will be an option to use  English at start-up....no need to wait to confirm.

I doubt that the Japanese model would sound any different. I am still really annoyed that Sony refuses to release 64gb models in the US or Europe. This is plain dumb. I am very tempted to get a 64gb Japanese model, but it seems - looking at the first ebay listings - that these won't be available until November (and are fairly expensive).

Sony has done that for the past few, going back to the NW-A847 (not NWZ) which was, I believe, the first 64GB WM. I got that not long after getting the NW-X1060 black ice from Japan mainly due to capacity. The F series comes out in Japan on October 20. List price for the 64GB is 35,000 yen for all but the silver, which is 38,000. So you're looking at nearly $500 without any markup. A 64GB iPod touch is I believe $399, so a bit of a premium.

Not sure if anyone else saw this (http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20120920_560313.html), but the retro Walkman skins look cool. Seem to be exclusive to the Japanese models.

I think the price will be lower if the F807 is ever to release in USA.  It will likely match the iPod Touch price at $400.  The problem is, Sony will not do that and we have to pay such premium $$ if we elect to import from Japan.
