Oh wow, that's a really cool version. And 64GB... very nice. But the price! 38000 yen converts to about $485 right now!! Ouch!!!

Good news. Nice to see that Sony didn't abandoned their flagship player

And the Z gets Android 4.0 and FLAC support

The 64GB from Japan tempts me. I got the X1060 from Japan. Loved it, but ultimately wanted more capacity so I got the NW-A847 (also from Japan). Didn't sound as good. Got the Z1070 last year when it came out in Tokyo, but the F seems to be the Z in a smaller package. So I'll see ... I hope the F has the ability to work in English like the Japanese Z. The update for the Japanese Z with 4.0 and FLAC is not out yet. Just checked.

I believe it does, because both Z & F are working in android OS, which support multilanguage interface
That doesn't mean anything when it comes to Sony :) I was pleasantly surprised the Japanese Z supported English (in addition to Japanese). No Sony Walkman from Japan has really ever done that in the post-ATRAC-does-not-exist-in-the-rest-of-the-world era. Now, If you wanted German or some other European language, no dice. It was more of a thought out loud in the hopes the same tradition carries on with the F. Even in the Walkmans that were released in some form worldwide (such as the A and X series), Japan only got Japanese. No option to change languages. The OSes are nearly identical between Japan and ROW, so it's clearly a choice made by Sony. There are a few nitpicky things I have issues with on the Z. Curious if the 4.0 ICS update fixes them or if they're fixed in the F, too.

As I understand it, android 4.0 is shipped with this player and 4.0 does not support gapless playback.
However, the poweramp (maybe others) app will do gapless playback.
In android 4.1, gapless playback arrives as core android functionality.
How likely is it that this player will be upgraded to 4.1?
Can this be done by us without an official Sony 4.1 load?
I'm a total novice with regard to android (and this player would be my first)

The Japanese WMs always have supported gapless and still do with ATRAC. The only upgrades for the Z (Sony's 1st Android-based WM) have been through Sony, so don't count on being able to upgrade outside of Sony's official stuff.

I'm actually afraid that I will loose ability to play Atrac & Atrac Lossless once I upgrade to ICS. I also want to keep my noise canceling capacity.
Won't happen with the Japan WMs. ATRAC is still supported - even part of the specs of the new F on Sony's site in Japan. In the upgrades for the current Z nothing was lost. I would expect that would be the same on the Z post-upgrade from 2.3 to 4.0. Since none of the WMs outside of Japan support ATRAC anyway, it's not an issue for them to begin with. The F also lists the MDR-NWNC200 as a compatible accessory, so I would say the NC functionality is staying.
NO way....I bet you with my...well that will never happen with the Japanese version, anyway I am at your service, as soon as the update is available , I will test it for you.....now the waiting game begins.

I need gapless FLAC playback, don't really care about other codecs. If I read this correctly, the basic WM will not do lossless playback without an app such as poweramp, at least as shipped with 4.0 android. Is this correct?
It will with WAV files. But since it appears that FLAC will be supported (at least with the Japanese version), it remains to be seen if it'll be gapless. I am assuming it will be knowing Sony. I'll know after I go to Japan in December.
