Headphones suggestions £100-£200

I'm just about to go to uni and would like a good pair of headphones, I like my music but I'm not really into the technical side of it.  I tried a pair of Dr Dre Mixr Beats in Currys and they sounded really good compared to the other sets they had there, but I've heard a lot of people say that you're paying too much just for the brand and you can get better sets for less money.  So, what would you recommend that is at least as good as the Mixr Beats and is cheaper, or the same price but better sound or build quality?

Thanks for any advice.

If you thought the MIXR was good, you're going to be absolutely astounded by some of the sets we suggest to you. The first time I heard the MIXR I was absolutely disgusted with it.

If you're looking for something that sounds similar to the MIXR and is nearly indestructible, a good choice to start with is the Audio-Technica ATH-M50, a perennial favorite on these forums. If you're a basshead, the Ultrasone HFI-580 and M-Audio Q40 are great (the former if you like detail and soundstage and the latter if you would rather have more bass than greater detail). Something similar to the MIXR in sound that beats it and is advertised for a similar purpose is the AIAIAI TMA-1, a dark, warm-sounding on-ear portable DJ can that's got a cult following here. If you want something with sparkly highs and tons of detail with considerable bass thump still there, the Ultrasone HFI-780 is another great choice.

Every one of these is guaranteed to sound much better than the MIXR.

If you can get yourself down to HMV they may still have some Denon AH-D2000s left. They are discontinued and HMV were selling off their remaining stock at £150 a couple of weeks ago, which is a decent discount.

They are a fantastic set of cans and a real step up in class over anything you'd find in Curry's !

Seconded. I picked up a pair for a friends birthday today. What a bargain, I paid £270 for mine.
