HDMI I2S audio is not compatible with regular HDMI like from a Blu-Ray player.   It is called "HDMI I2S" because it borrows the same physical interface (chips, cables, connectors) as the home entertainment variety.  But the signals on the wires are much different and incompatible.

And RJ45 I2S and HDMI I2S format the data the same on the cable but physically are not compatible with each other.  "HDMI I2S" uses LVDS balanced signals while RJ45 uses single ended TTL.

Does anyone know the what the HDMI receiver chip on the Audio-gd I2S mod is?  Mine has the identifying info scratched out for some reason.

My chip is scratched as well but could partially read the top after wetting with alcohol and using a microscope.  It may be a TI SN65LVDS048A but can definitely read "LVDS048A" on the 2nd line.   Functionally, looks correct for the circuit.

Thanks.  You did better than me.  All I got was the "i" in the TI logo.  Perhaps Audio-gd has improved their IC scraping technique :)
