Best speakers budget $300

Hey mates, I'm looking for some speakers, I'm considering the AudioEngine A5, Harman Kardon Soundsticks III and Sony MHCEC909iP.
From what I've read the A5's have the best sound quality, then Soundsticks, and then the Sony.

If you can name any others it would be great!

Note: They will be used with an iPod. Except the Sony one, cause it has CD Player and radio.

*iPod Classic > LOD > PA2V2 > Speakers

Genres: Rock, Alternative, Metal, Grunge, Punk, etc.

Based on the genres I listen to, I don't need a subwoofer, but it would be good to have one as a feature.

I'm guessing you want a powered set and not a pair that requires an amp, right?

Just saying what I would consider, never heard either one but I do have JBL Control + 2.0 and Bose Cinemamate 2.1. They're both very good, I'm sure the A5 would be fine as well as the Soundsticks for their price.

The pa2v2 is a headphone amp correct? If it is then you dont need that in your chain if your using powered monitors, actually you dont need it in your chain at all when using you ipod with speakers it will mud the signal up.

The PA2V2 is useless for passive monitors as well, it's only good for headphones.

I have a pair of the M-Audio BX5 D2's and think they are pretty awesome. I listened to the A5's at a store and really didn't find them to be that great. I would have went with the BX8's however at that time, I didn't want to spend more than $200 on speakers. The BX8's are $300 from B&H Photo and would be great. If I could redo my purchase, I would get them instead.
