How many headphones do you have on order now, Craigster ;-)??

@yokken, thx for the initial impressions. Would love to hear more when you've had more time with them.

Maybe it's just me, but they're starting to sound better. Clearer. And I think I found the sweet spot on my head. Reiterating again, they're not as clear as the DT880s which made Infected Mushroom sound like it was being played in my earballs, but the clarity is satisfying considering I've only had them on for a little under 3 hours. Gonna leave them at home while I'm at work tomorrow and queue up a ton of music in VLC (so I don't wreck my play counts lol) so I can get an extra 10 hours of breaking in and have them sound even better when I get home from work.

I think by clear I also mean sparkly. They don't sparkle as much as the Beyers. But AGAIN -- crisp highs. Just not sparkly.

LOL, I returned several.  This hobby is turning into an addiction.  I just need to purchase M-100, Momentum, PSB M4U1, Yamaha Pro 500, AKG Tiesto, Sony MDR-1, Ultrasone Signature DJ, Mad Dogs with the new Dog Pads and I will be all set after I return most of those and there are one or two left standing.  Then I can retire or at least take a leave of absence.

The problem is there are so few brick and mortar stores in the US to audition a wide variety of high-end headphones.  Of course, most of the headphones I think I want aren't out yet.

Not too certain if you're a believer of burn-in or break-in but personally I've become a convert. Would be interesting to see the results 10 hrs later.

Also would love to see if these headphones benefit greatly or marginally from amping. I see you have the Fiio E17 in your profile list. Some headphones I've had in the past (namely the M-80) were well tuned that amping only improved marginally (to my ears).

Related to burn-in, I am wondering if what yokken is perceiving as greater clarity from the Beyers is really their brightness compared to Momentum as his ears adjust.  Look forward to your progress, yokken.

I think burning in headphones really does help loosen up the drivers. The bass/sound coming straight from my SGS3 was not half bad, but I only listened to about a minute and a half before hooking it up to my E17 which I'm using as a USB DAC and amping the cans. Now I haven't heard Beats but I wouldn't go so far as to say the bass from these is on a level to convert those who prefer boomy/muddy bass, which I think most of us here dislike. As for the brightness of the DT880s, I think they are certainly brighter than the Momentums but not as bright as people make Grados out to be. The Beyers are never shrill or sibilant (at least in my limited experience) and I love the openness and separation of all the sounds. The soundstage of the Momentums sounds a little more closed, but that's to be expected from closed-back circumaurals. Still pretty good though, hoping it opens up a bit more directionally with some burn-in.

---

Just put my DT880s back on. Damn these are sparkly! But... after listening to the Momentums for the past 3 hours, I have to say they don't sound as fun. There's not nearly as much bass... not even close. I turned the bass up to +6dB on my E17 and it still doesn't even come close. I think there are things the Beyers excel at and there are things the Sennheisers excel at. Pretty obvious observation, but hey. If I had to keep one pair, just based upon what I've heard in the past 3 days, I'd probably keep the Momentums. They look better and sound more fun. They're not nearly as comfortable as the DT880s but with form you sometimes lose function. Also, comparing with this song (highly recommended):

Can't wait to hear some reviews on these new senns.. I've been starting to drift away from sennheiser as my top brand. These cans should bring me back.

Congratulations on being the first of us guinea pigs and thanks for the initial impressions, yokken.  Mine shipped this morning and will hopefully arrive before the weekend.  Have you tried them with other genres yet?

It has more punch, whereas I found the 280s to be a bit muddy. The mids are much better than the DT880s, but I can't quite recall the 280s being anything special in that department. Man, now that I think about it, the 280s don't seem special in any department. Haha. The highs are not bad at all, not quite as crisp as the DT880s but I can hear tons of depth in every song I listen to. Echoes, artists breathing, that sort of thing. They definitely sound fun, versus analytical. Keep in mind I've been listening to them for less than an hour. I imagine the drivers need to warm and loosen up. It's quite chilly here today as well. Also the cord nowhere near as long as the Beyers but I think that's the point. And I don't look like I'm landing a plane with them on!

Oh, and the other cord that it comes with, without the controls, doesn't have the swivel plug on it. But the pause/play/skip function of the center button does work with my Galaxy S III, just not the volume.

My right ear was starting to twitch from having the awkward pressure on it the whole time. So I stuffed my ears into the earcups. Odd solution, but it works! My ears don't hurt anymore... I wonder how long this will last before they start to ache in a different way. I would love to stretch out the inside of the earcups a little so my ears fit in there better.

I've been playing a ton of electronic stuff because it is clearly my favorite, but I did play some rap and it sounded good. Accurate, full bass with upfront mids. Played some of The Killers and that was great as well, had me singing along and tapping my foot. But looking at the past 25 songs played... I'm not embarrassed to say almost all of them are electronic.

And you shouldn't be embarrassed.  I'm just glad to hear someone enjoying the Momentum.  Looking forward to your thoughts after more time with them.  Cheers!

If you've heard The XX, their voices are very clear and the guitar shines through without drowning anything out. Pseudo-acoustic. It's great. The slight warmth of the Momentums gives it a lot of life.

The more I hear reactions, the more this smacks me of the IE8/80... That would be a nice balance to the HD600.

You could probably measure the size of your ear to benefit HeadFiers interested in the Momentum. :D
