Ultimate Ears UE 900 Discussion and Impressions Thread - Page 45

For what it's worth...and I like the TF10, the bass and treble are both very detailed but there is a veil with the midrange and this makes the entire IEM/presentation sound disconnected.  Some say it's recessed but I hear it very present but a veil over it.

I was laughed at when (after hearing W4) I thought UM3X sounded like an upgrade or improved W4.  It's more efficient and fuller sounding.  Instrumemnt separation is about the same, W4 soundstage is larger and overall presentation is a bit smoother to where it almost sounds veiled and dark.  UM3X favors no frequency and is perhaps the only "balanced" IEM I have heard that is also "full" sounding and not wimpy.

I don't think it's so much of a veil with the TF10. It's just that the bass and treble are so lively (especially the treble), but the mids are...dead.

On a calmer phone it might not be so bad, but the TF10 is anything but. The bass and treble seem to be of doing their own thing without the mids there as the glue to hold them together. That's the true source of disconnect for me.

Very well put!  I don't disagree at all.

I have occassionally heard a veil or cloudiness in the TF10s' mids and I think I'm going to start paying more attention to when it happens...because it isn't always like that. Weird.

http://fs-digital.net/thread-null-34332-1-1.html Saw a local Hong Kong forum posted FR graph of UE900 vs TF10 (excuse me if this has been posted before as I don't follow this thread regularly)

Is it really true that a rapid drop in impedance for TF10 after 1khz from 60ohm to 20-30 ohm could lead to distortion if the output current is not adequate (I think that's what the Chinese article is claiming)?

I just want some IEMs that'll last me a long time. Since I've been eyeing the TF 10s because of its positive reviews, its successor is close to being released and now I'm confused on which to buy... I would get the TF 10s in a heartbeat if build quality wasn't complained about so much (comfort isn't a dealbreaker for me) but then I'd have to buy a decent cable along with it whereas buying the UE 900s I get TWO sturdy cables (handy for my iPhone), better fits, smaller profile, and arguably better build quality.

So matching street-priced TF 10s to MSRP UE 900s, I'm not yet sure if the extra cash is worth it. I'm a broke college student lol

Btw, I'm gonna try going through UE Centerstage for an attempt at 40 or 50% off the 900s... fingers crossed popcorn.gif

Centerstage isn't working right now (we think that it's a pre-order bug).  So do test it when it's released.  I wouldn't say that the build quality is sound/perfect.  The connectors do snap together nicely and are firm.  But do have a slight wiggle to them (doesn't seem to cut into sound though :))...  IDK if this was the intended design (I think it may be).  They do pivot though, which helps with fit actually.  I haven't used the TF10, so I can't help much further.

For 40-50% off, these are well worth the money, no doubt.

"We", as in you are an employee of UE? I'm now curious because ever since you reviewed the 900s, you have been a sort of de facto spokesman for UE in this thread. I don't know if you are a paid

employee or if you deputized yourself on their behalf purely out of appreciation of the product (which some people unknowingly do when they love a piece of gear), thus making you feel comfortable

using "we" in that context. For the sake of transparency, I'd like to know exactly what you mean by "we." Forgive me if I sound accusatory, but I think that you could easily be perceived as though

you are a part of UE in some fashion. If this is true and you have already disclosed this, then all apologies.

We as in people from Head-Fi :p  XD  I'm not alone when I said that (I think at least 1 other person said that) XD  If I was an employee, I wouldn't be allowed to post here like I am.  Sorry about the confusion.

Has even one compared this to the Shure se535 and the Westone 4 yet?

I've done the Westone 4...  http://www.head-fi.org/t/624973/ultimate-ears-ue-900-discussion-and-appreciation-thread/420#post_8686087

Someone really needs to link that to the OP...  I hate searching for that post over and over again :p  Haven't heard the 535, so I can't comment on that.

And thanks for the reassurance. If I succeed I'll claim these for sure, and maybe get a friend to buy some too since I would receive 2x 40/50% off codes

I was reading up on the problems with the code and preorders on their official Twitter; hopefully it is just a preorder bug and will be fixed when they release it. But I imagine Centerstage would take ages for me so that wouldn't be a problem!
