Body in contrast to the rest of the bass spectrum.  The TF10 may have the same body, but it also has a lot more mid and sub-bass to back it.  It is able to create a rumble effect that way.  The body on the 900 is large compared to the actual quantity of bass (by contrast).  I may be assuming a few things about the TF10s though.

Hmm i'm considering between this and the 3.ai. My main source will be the cowon j3. I listen mainly to progressive rock, progressive metal, sometimes a little bit of jazz and vocal. Would you recommend the UE 900 or the 3.ai?

Will you be posting a review? :) Please do.

How was your first impression of the 'phones? Do they feel like a quality product?

Have you burned them in yet?

Do they sound like a quality product?

Sorry I just bombarded you with questions. I get excited really easily... :)

I have not given formal impressions, but I have given this: http://www.head-fi.org/t/624973/ultimate-ears-ue-900-discussion-and-appreciation-thread/435#post_8686087

I will be writing a review, these are burned in, but won't be for long (the unit I will be using won't be burned in on Friday) ;) (you can figure out what that means XD).  The review has been put on a short delay due to complications.

Thanks. :) and Ah, complications, the bane of my existence.

I think that's what's happening here. Perhaps his were faulty or died or broke. We may never know. What is clear is that he's not allowed to tell us anything yet... :P but that's all right. :)

They don't work anymore, so he's getting a replacement. That's a big red flag for me, unless he accidentally destroyed them eek.gif

They still work... I am sending them back though. Not the first IEM I've debt back. I made a post in the M100 thread about first runs/pre-production models having a bigger tendency to have problems (that are fixed). Kind of related. I fixed this problem a bit (I personally can't induce it anymore by force), they do want to look at it. All ill say. They work though.

To add, my Etymotic pre-production EtyKids had a different problem as well.

Well, these aren't pre-sale demos, so it's a red flag in my book, especially since you're being kind of secretive about the issue. I can't imagine what one might gain by being hush-hush about the reason for returning something they spent money on....is there a non-disclosure agreement in the event of a warranty claim? rolleyes.gif

Yeah they are... Why would you say otherwise? Do you have a pair yet or did you pre order them?

I forgot that you were given a sample. Are they really demos (somehow different from the final product)? If so, I can understand not wanting to blow UE's cover if the final product is going to differ somehow considering their generosity and not wanting to bite the hand that feeds etc...On the other hand, giving you a demo means it is possible the final product will be different. We can probably safely assume that they aren't going to tinker with the sound, but we can't really be 100% positive without confirmation of some sort. My guess is that the source of the problem is the pins and sockets, but that's just speculation.

Whatever the issue with them is, it's pretty much a moot point for me since they have proprietary cable connectors. I already have a proprietary connector for my J3, so I prefer to not have more of that sort of limitation if I can avoid it. I'd really love to test them out just to satisfy my curiosity, but I'm going to sit tight for awhile and enjoy what I have - the beaches of Thailand beckon and somehow I think my wife will respond better to a vacation than the sight of me fiddling with more gear.

I already know of one person that does NOT have a a pre-production model that has the same issue.  He promptly sent it back for a refund and does not want to deal with it since he's not a fan of swivel cables to begin with.

Bottom line, the defect has gotten out onto production units as well.  Do the boxes have serial numbers?  I suppose UE could issue a recall but that would only be effective if they are able to isolate start and stop production lots containing the defect.

I have seen comments from a few people who had to fiddle with the connectors to get them to work and also have a friend who sent back the retail version he had because he didn't like the swivel connector plus he had issues with it connecting properly at the start. So I personally will be waiting several months to see if this potential issue turns out to be a non-issue or a real pain for the owners of the UE900. Having been burned by this issue with my Shure 215's I have ZERO desire to have the hassle of this problem on a $400 IEM. The only way I will change my mind is if the reviews of these from a sonic perspective intrigue me enough to want them AND a major chain retailer starts to carry them and can purchase an Instant product replacement plan.
