Wow, that seems extremely loud! I use 3-5 from 16 BUT I have capped my volume at 50% AND the German iPhone is capped by default at ~80% which you can only remove with a jailbreak. So effectively I probably use volume 2 or 3 when I'm outside and 1 at home.
Awesome earpiece. Design is splendid!

I feel the same way. Why bother with such a high-end IEM? Sort of like watching a 32" "1080" flatscreen from 25 feet away versus 6 feet away.

That's some loud music you're listening to.
Your ears get used to it and when you turn the volume down it raises your attention. I get more out of the music and catch more details this way. Also, I can still hear the phone ring.

I guess...but 30dB is 30dB and not very engaging.
I usually listen 80% max Ipod volume to appreciate the full experience of the IEM's I am using. I estimate it is about 90-100dB but I only listen for 45 minutes max (a workout) so this is very healthy.
I have listened this way my whole life and latest hearing test I had still shows me with perfect hearing (whatever they consider that to be).

Yeah, at 25% of my iPod touch, I'm at around 65-70 (eyeear-balling it). At around 50... Well, that's the thing, I've never been above 31.25% :p I've calculated the volume around 25% to be about 65 as well using 10*log(Vout/R/.05) + S.
I have no idea about the dB value but when I'm in bed I want to turn it even lower than level 1/16, which sadly is not possible without external amp.
Well, my neighbors are very quiet and I use the DT-880 on the balcony. :)

All the iPods are around 1.11v out max. Can't speak for anything else.
