IMO UE900 is technically better than W4 because

 

it has better bandwidth, both on par in treble extension but bass extension is better on the UE900

Both have a similar resonant peak in the treble but the W4's is worse, UE900's is fairly small. 

W4 has more midbass, imo it makes it more flawed as it's a bit too much but this one is up for debate. UE900's bass is tunable to some extent. 

imaging is similar as is soundstage.

The UE900 geberally performs on par with or better than other universal current generation top IEMs, but it's FR is a bit annoyingly off from neutral and bass doesn't go as deep cf EX1000 (yes that one again).

it's very neutral when modded. unmodded it's not that great...

 

mod=covering pinhole partially or completely depending on taste and adding impedance.

Sorry, I'm late to this thread... my understanding going back a bit that the mod reduces/tightens up bass a bit?  Or are there other things?

 

Also it seems there was some argument about conflicting measurements and there being a dip in the midrange.  Was there any resolution here?  

I will let the graph guys argue out the peaks and valleys. As someone who just listens I am not noticing any dips in voices. I have heard that female voices can be veiled but I am unable to hear that myself and I do have quite a bit of female singing from female jazz singers, female Celtic singers, female rock singers, choral, and even some opera. I also have a fair amount of male singers in similar genres and none sound recessed to my ears.

I suspect you might really like this IEM bobeau, but do recommend buying it through an easy return source to be safe if possible.

the mods makes the treble and bass more flat, simple as that. Stock, there is a dip in the mids, not when modded. The argument was settled as one graph was a semi pinhole blocked ue900 so it looked slighly better than stock. 

 

..and I'll take added mid-bass as an advantage over UE900.  It gives the bass more weight which is mandatory on a $400 quad-driver.

 

Too much mid-bass would be W3.

but it lacks subbass/extension which is even more important for weight imo. 

 

Better balanced?? Hell no!

I've listened to both W4 and ue900 and I prefer the Ue900. W4 is more backward so the vocals (singers) seems to be a distance away. Ue900 vocals are forward so it feels like the singer is singing into your ears.

Again, that can be a preference thing.  For example the overly forwardness of midrange in the SE535 is a turn off to many.

 

If you could take the improved clarity of the UE900 and combine it with the added bass weight of the W4 it would truly be the best universal.

You should not compare the Shure mids with the UE. SE535 has fatiguing forward mids. The UE900 is not fatiguing at all, yet it plays straight forward with upfront vocals.

And the W4 is much too warm. It kills a lot of energy. The bloated midbass is a mess. I sold the W4 because of that.

 

I don't think UE900 needs more bass. PRaT is perfection with this one.

I don't know what the technical term is called. But the UE900 has the ability to transition better than any IEM I have owned. This is really noticeable in volume shifts, they make songs soar and seem effortless as they reach their crescendo.
