A lot changes as the pinhole blocks :p  For all intensive purposes, I'm assuming "energy" normally correlates to a bump in the upper midrange to lower treble (maybe also midrange).  So before the pinhole fills, the W4 is only a little darker than the UE 900.  The W4 still has more energy in the upper mids and lower treble.  After the pinhole fills, the W4 becomes a little more darker, but the 900s gain a lot more energy.  

Ok mine are only a couple days old so if your right about the pin hole I would probably like the W4 and the UE900 may get to bright. I may take these back then and switch to the W4.

The only issue I had so far is I lost my shirt clip:P Otherwise, absolutely gorgeous, loving the seal of the comply foams too (yeah never owned 100+ IEMs before). 

Hmmmm, if I want to get the Westone 4R for a good price I have to order today. My problem is I REALLY like the sound of the UE900 and am worried that the little intangibles that make me like them so much may not be there with the W4R. So far I have had zero issues with mine build wise.

I also wonder about the pinhole, I have a flake type wax versus wet wax so am not sure this hole will get plugged on my pair.

anyone have thoughts?

 

I have dry wax too, it still filled, it took a few weeks to fill "completely" though (it wasn't entirely completely).  If you want to simulate the worst it can get, get a small piece of tape and put it over the pinhole nozzle.  Although naturally filling it with your earwax with time will not have as large of an effect, it should still give you an idea of the direction the UE 900 will head.  

Ahh good idea, I will try that! If I still like it plugged I may decide to keep these.

one last question, can the hole be unplugged, or is to tiny to do that?

 

Melt the wax and drain it out :p  Make sure you use water whose temperature is above that of the melting point of wax, but below the melting point of most plastics.  

Ok did my best to cover that hole (covered up some of the other hole as well I think). I did notice a very slight change in the bass but I had to work hard to notice the difference. I still liked the sound. I have a brush from another BA IEM, I think I will just brush them out daily (bedtime ritual) and keep these. I imagine the W4 will be better but I just don't want to mess with this signature I am hearing as it is so right on what I want sound wise.

For those with issues with sound cutting out, I'm now thinking it may be a problem with the cable, and not the drivers itself. Ive owned a pair of UE900 without any issues, but returned them to go with the SE535 ltds. Liked the cables of the UE900 so much that i bought a pair to use with my 535, and for the first time am noticing crackling/sound cutting out from the earpieces if connector is moved. Prior, the 535s never experienced any problems with the stock cable
