What is Denon up to these days? Anything we should take note of?

After stumbling across this forum/site a week ago I realized I need a serious upgrade from my HD 280 pros and my SE 110's. I just discovered the D5000's and now they are discontinued. They look so beautiful, and are right up my alley with that glossy wood finish. I will try to pick some up used. Having a $500 budget is the pits for my hungry ears!!!

You can get them on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000MVEC10/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used  For $509 like new. And trust me they are like new. I love amazon for there deals like thatbiggrin.gif

They have a whole new line of "Beats-inspired" cans. They haven't gotten a lot of praise for their sonic qualities however. I have my D5k's coming in tomorrow. I bought them used as it's really the best way to go since they are discontinued and the price is going to keep going up over the years.

Amazon.com will not ship to Canada. I tried already :(

They discriminate against Canadians, and Amazon.ca is a joke. No selection of anything, double the price of .com

the d5000 is not glossy wood, that's the d7000. the d5000 dose not have polish on it.

It's finished with something, it's just not the "piano enamel" finish the 7k has.

Yes, I was aware it was not the piano finish. The D5000 has a wax nonetheless

What is Denon's replacement the maniacs?
They seem geared to portable players, am I missing something?

there made so you can use them for portable use if you wanted to, since alot of people were making d2000 portable rigs. But the new d600 comes with the portable cable with the mic and everything and a 10 feet long cable for home use.

They come with 2 cables short works with iDevices only long for everything else Unlike D5000/7000 they have much better isolation

Guess having never owned any Denon's, it is probably not my place to comment, but I will. It is too bad that they changed the style so much. I really want D5000's and am in the market for some. Having been discontinued, I guess I will be looking for some used.

How do the sound in comparison to the Dxxxx's?

Another alternative to the AH-D2000/5000 is the Kenwood KH-K1000. They run around $400, they're smoother and more holographic sounding (imho they're superior headphones) - I have no idea how the new Denon headphones stack up against these three. The D5000 wood finish is not world-ending, if you want a really nice gloss wood finish, get an Audio-Technica. Like the ATH-W1000X (around $550-$600 - I have not heard these). Finally, yet another consideration, would be the Beyerdynamic T70 or T70p. I'm not personally a fan, but they're well made and as long as you can get a good seal, will reproduce good (albeit a bit thin) bass. If you had me rank:

- Kenwood KH-K1000
- Denon headphones
- Beyer T70

Again I don't know where I'd put the W1000X in there (I don't like the 3D Wing headband based on experiences so they're not really on my radar), but by looks alone, they outclass all of the above. The T70 are probably the lightest and best isolating, and the Kenwood probably the most comfortable. All should be in that $400-$600 range. If you're going to use these mobile, the T70p or something like that would be appropriate, as the Denon and Kenwood headphones don't provide enough isolation and aren't robust enough.

At a lower price point, you might also consider (in less particular order):

- Bose QC15
- Sennheiser HD380Pro
- Audio-Technica ATH-ESW9

And if isolation/closed design is not important at all:

- Sennheiser HD 600/650
- AKG 70x series
