On August 27, Sony announced the upcoming update to their popular Extra Bass series of portable headphones. The new headphones are designed to be more portable as all models now utilize swiveling earcups to fold flat. The new models include the 30mm driver MDR-XB400 (MSRP: ¥4935), the 40mm driver MDR-XB600 (MSRP: ¥8715), and the range-topping 50mm driver MDR-XB900, which will retail for ¥18375. The new Extra Bass headphones will be on sale in Japan on October 10.

The XB400 comes in three color choices: black, white, and red.

The XB600 comes in black or gold.

Hope there is improvement in the mids.

I bet they are trying to compete with the new JVC products.

On a side note, am I the only one who is somewhat saddened by the more "normal" styling of these new Extra Bass headphones? I'm going to miss those big, cushiony, tire-like earpads of the previous models.

Those look very nice while the big cushions looked different I just found it to funny looking. These on the other hand look very stylish in my opinion. I look forward to some reviews.

Yup.  I dig the 600 in gold above.  That and my brown Zune would like each other very much.

I'm kind of saddened too. The XB line made a big bombastic statement about what they were. These look nice and classy like the rest of the Sony lineup, but honestly this market segment shouldn't look classy.

It would be interesting comparing the new MDR-1 to the XB900...

At least the XB900 has a single sided entry cable. Finally, sheesh.

This makes the most sense, IMO for portable. Why is it that they don't make the lower end models single sided?

It's a marketable feature, that's why! :P

Also, its probably a teensy teensy bit more complex to route the cable through the headband.

I guess my XB 700's just became collectors items. I'm wondering if I should have sold my XB500's now.

Looks like Sony read my suggestions of a XB series refresh, XB400, XB600 but I said XB800 though, damn. :D Not sure about what I feel about on ear pads but they look so comfy it shouldn't really matter.

I'm with you buddy, I really thought the XB 500 / 700 / 1000 series was a great design, of course minus the ability to fold them which never interested me anyway. I really liked the XB500 comfort levels and HUGE wrap around cushions. very comfortable~! The mids / highs were so so and the bass I found mid boomy.

Design wise I loved them, not so hot on these new ones.
