I wonder how many who voted actually heard them, or if they did, just casually at a meet or store? Having them all at home for many months, my rankings haven't changed much. I might have preferred the T1s to the HD800s initially, but as I scaled up my amp/dac, the HD800's magical nature really shone through.  The LCD-3s are equally finicky of upstream gear. So that leads me to my next thought, as the T1s are easier to get to sound right (less transparent in comparison to upstream gear), could also be a contributing factor?

I agree 100%, I have been wowed by the lcd3 and the hd800 but I was never wowed by the t1.

I'm still wowed by the T1s, just not as much.

Everyone's got diff music tastes and use them for different purposes.  For the music I listen to I rank T1's above all.  Also my lcd2 and the hd800 I tried pulled my hair.  T1 don't.  My question is, is the OP asking for opinions for discussion, or is he asking so he can be swayed by popular opinion so he can decide which way to go for?

Yeah I'm finding the results surprising..i thought the HD800 were going to win by a wide margin based on their popularity here (i.e. number of threads, hype, etc)

The HD800's are by far the most pickiest with amp's out of the lot of headphones in the voting poll, followed by the T1.

Have owned 3 HD800's (still have 1 left) and the LCD2 rev.1's (on sale in the F/S section).

Heard and auditioned LCD2 rev.2 (4 variants, 2 from early batch upon release in Q3 2011, 2 later versions from late Q4). Through the Burson 160 range, Luxman P-series and SPL Phonitor) and all the Violectrics except the V181.

Auditioned a friends T1 through the RWA Isabilna HPA/DAC and few DIY OTL tube amp's.

Haven't heard the LCD3's yet.

My gear consist of the Little Dot MK VI+ and a Beta22 amp through a Ross Martin DAC.

My order of preference:

HD800 > LCD2 rev.1 = T1 > LCD2 rev.2

The HD800 can be a bright phone if you don't have the right matching amp setup to go with it, same with the bright treble some people get which end making the artist pronouncing everything with a "s". Very picky with amp's, don't match a bright sig amp with the HD800's because it will sound very bright and un-enjoyable.

My LCD2 rev.1's are about even to the T1 I've auditioned. The LCD2's in general are not picky with amp's but it does benefit from it, the T1 is a slightly bright sig headphone not as much as the HD800's. The T1 requires quite a beefy amplifier (not as much as the HE-6 or AKG k1000). The sound of the T1's are very alike the DT880 600ohm in many areas, think of the T1 as you get the neutrality of the DT880 mate with the DT990's bass department adding a bit more refinement to the sound and you have the T1.

The LCD2's are an improvement (only little but tad bit noticeable on the amplification) over the LCD2's in certain areas such as the treble extension and having the treble bit more forward. Due to this it pushes the bass frequency back a bit, making it seem less in the bass department compared to the rev.1's. This also results in a slightly warmer signature rather then the laidback and slightly darker signature the rev.1's are. The rev.1's have a musicality sparkle to it that makes it more enjoyable overall then the rev.2's for me at least and few others may agree as well.

Other headphones worth mentioning, T5P, HE500, HE-6.

Simple. The HD800 is overhyped and overpriced IMO. The popularity and number of threads can be due to overzealous HD800 owners. As you can see, there are several or more people who prefer the sonic presentation of the T1 over the HD800.

This poll is hardly definitive. I doubt many of the voters have even glimpsed what the HD800 is capable of.

Head-Fi is diluted by self proclaimed experts only familiar with lower tier cans and hearing the flagships in brief auditions or at meets. In these settings it's easy to fathom how the T1's and LCD-2's of the world immediately grab attention. Anyone who's spent time with these cans beyond brief listens know their peculiarities, their best and worst. It's a shame that insights from these experienced members are often drowned out by the rabid fanboys.

I'm not at all.  Most people who claim to have heard the HD800 have never heard the HD800 (properly).  They simply have no frame of reference of their relative scaling and probably listen to a lot of compressed music devoid of resolution anyway.  I guarantee you if most of the folks in the US who wear headphones participated in this poll the answer would be Beats by Dre.  When people say the HD800 is thin, bass light and lacks impact that's a dead giveaway they haven't heard them properly.  Or that the SA5000 or some Denon or Shure has better clarity or resolving ability is another to rolleyes.gif at.

Head-Fi is also diluted by pompous snobs who consider themselves so very aloof of the riff-raff here, and who will often proclaim that anything that costs lass than their very élite multi-thousand-bucks systems is mere low-fi, hardly capable of reproducing music at all. That's just as bad as the self-proclaimed experts you have mentioned. No offense to anyone. wink.gif

It's preferred that you keep your sh1t stirring comments to yourself, you do have to keep in mind that the HD800's were released before any of the other mentioned headphones on the poll, even before I was made an account during my proud days of lurking about's on these boards and judging from some iconic posters most of those that have owned the HD800's, either still own it, moved onto Stax electrostat rigs, retired from the head-fi audiophile community or have upgraded to other headphones. Posting something like "the HD800 is overhyped and overpriced" is imo not the way to go, otherwise I'll start flame bait threads/post such as the LCD2 is overhyped and crappy compared to the HD800 in sonic qualities just because you don't like a headphone you don't need to shut it down for other's, showing a bad rep for the company. No headphone is designed for everyone, you have to keep an open mind that everyone has their own preferences and it doesn't just boil down to just looks.

Thanks

Your Schiit Lyr doesn't pair well or do justice with the HE6 and HD800's :)

I really like the open and huge soundstage of HD800 but overall I'm leaning towards the rock'n'roll-slam of the T1's. I've got them both so I can change phones with the mood I'm in=)

Squeezebox Touch (FLAC-files) --> Meier Corda Classic --> Beyerdynamic T1/Sennheiser HD800
