Yea, I'm referring to the red-cored translucent gray tips.

The opening is small yes, like a genuine Sony Hybrid tip. I'm all for using tips with a larger bore as I do so with other IEMs I use Heir tips on ASG-2, though those tips Maquire has worked well for me also. Not only for sound, but fit/seal too, I preferred them over the supplied Heir tips and Ortofon, personally.

There's nothing wrong with that. We all hear things differently (different ear shapes, sizes, different gear, etc). Just in my case it kills the sound staging, increases the treble, bass and alters the mids. All of which weren't to my liking. I've never found an IEM yet that I've actually liked the EX tips. Well there was one instance where I did a tip mod and I kinda liked the sound but I ended up breaking one of my extra LL tips in the process so that was stopped dead in its tracks. I combined two tips for this mod which was to my liking.

You are referring to the genuine Sony Hybrid tip pictured that you prefer to the stock red core tips? Just for clarification.

The tip in the picture is the hyrbid clone that maquire linked a page back.

And yes, I much prefer them over the Heir tips (on 1Plus2) which I have several pairs of and introduced to Lee. wink.gif

And very much enjoyed them for a few weeks when my ears lost weight lol ;). They did provide a good seal at the time and I liked the sound. Just for some reason I reverted back to my other tips as they sounded better to me again after a few weeks. Funny how that works... But this was when I was using the V-modas (which was when I had the old silver cable). Ended up going back to the JVC tips as the V-moda slightly increases the upper mid-range which was too much for me on the 1Plus2 with the gold cable. The JVC tips I find to slightly smooth out the sound a tad as well as adding more bass quantity.

Problem I've found with Heir tips is they have thin walls and for people on the go I feel they can collapse breaking seal easily, along with weak isolation, that's why keeping them on the very edge of an IEM's nozzle helps because you're achieving a tighter grab for the tip. (deeper seal) Though far as sound goes they really do the job for me with ASG-2 and a few other IEM's.

For some reason they do brighten an IEM's tonality a touch and really open up soundstage to my ears, they also help lift the upper mids (especially vocals) I had good results with the V-moda tips as well on RDB+ v1, I was using those for a while actually and you showed me those originally. wink.gif All I' say is keep a little kit of tips around, because what works with some won't work with others, that goes for individual people and IEM's.

Having them on the tip of the nozzle may be contributing to that brighter tonality and larger staging you are talking about. I liked them this way for some reason on the old silver cable. On the new gold cable I didn't like it as it took the presentation too far away. I use the JVC tips deep on the nozzle. Previously onto he silver I preferred the tips to be on the tip of the nozzle. Funny how much things can change just based on the cable and sources.

And I thought Mr Mimouille was not a measurements / graphs fanatic. Well, I guess I was wrong. Very wrong.
