Omega II review up at Positive Feedback Online - Page 2

I like his following quote:

"My foot was on the pulse of the recording. I'd like to call this a music lover's system, but it’s really an audiophile's wet dream."

Thanks for a very informative and entertaining review (like your writing style).

Good grief, I think I'm going to have to figure out how to do $6K worth of overtime.

$5750, did I read that correctly for that combo???

For that money, I could buy every woman in my family a Louis Vuitton bag and have money left over for AKG K1000.

If I knew that reviewer, I would send a K1000 to him stat, have him listen with headband taken off so the phone sits on the earlobes directly. At least, there won't be any complaints about midbass leading edge or "wispy" upper-mid/treble!
5750 is just list...you would never buy it for that much. They are 2899 with the 717 from Audiocubes. As for the junk about the K1000s without the headbands and so forth...these sorts of reviews are about subtle differences -- obviously these phones are amazing, but in some areas they might be surpassed by other phones -- that is what these sort of comments are trying to demonstrate. Carlo is well aware of the K1000's sound and how it compares to the Omega II.

Carlo,

Nice write-up man. Very well done and the addition of the KGSS to the article was very tactfully done. No real slam on the Stax stuff, but a definite declaration of which you preferred. I am glad you had a chance to listen to the amp for a while before it made its trip down south to me. Since it is being sold this summer we'll have to get together with AC1 and do some comparisons of the various flavors of the KGSS. If we can swing it maybe we could all head to Smokey's place to include the Weebl?

Not necessary. A beefed-up Weebl with a tube rectified power supply AND the Omega IIs will run under $5000.

Junk?

"As for the junk about the K1000s without the headbands and so forth"

As much as I loved the stock K1000, the "nude" K1000 sitting on my ears is a significant improvement, improving upon the biggest K1000 complaint, the bass extension/quantity, which in turn makes the entire midrange richer and treble less "obvious."

If you call that "junk" for reasons unclear to me, perhaps you can explain.

I'm glad the Omega II sells for less than I thought, but K1000 can also be bought for $660 at Meier Audio, making the Stax about 4.4 times the price.

Jon,

That's the Omega II and the SRM717 electrostatic amp for that price. The Omega II can be had for around $1600 on its own. That makes it 2.42 times the cost. Factor in a decent amp for the K1K and the gap closes considerably.

Junk in the slang sense -- not a value judgement. I own the K1000s myself and I think they are amazing headphones. That said, having heard the Omega II's, I can confidently say that they are better headphones in almost every way other than soundstage -- which it sounds like your mod would sacrifice. I will give it a try though next chance I get...

Hi. Where can you buy the Omega II without the amp for $1600? I could only find as low as $1829. If I can figure out how to powe it with my own tube amp, maybe I can try it.

Thanks for the clarification. You know how we K-1000 lovers can be Can you provide a link/info on how one can drive something like Omega II with your own tube amp? If I can pick up the Omega II at reasonable price and I can power it with my 30watt VAC Renaissance amp via some kind of adapter(which I can make), I'll try it. It's always fun to explore.

I've never been a soundstagephile, even with regular speakers. Still, I prefer the "stage" with K1000 directly on my ear b/c I value the solid, luscious center image above soundstage depth, width, etc. I've made some strides with K1000 by making up some good DIY extension cable and going "nude"(currently using coathanger wire as headband). I hope to work on bypassing the notch filter inside the K1000 as others have reported more purity this way. I expect I might have to fiddle with an outboard digital EQ if that happens...

Cheers and enjoy the music.

Thanks to Carlo for his rew... I 'd do not imagined what he said about the KGSS (!?).

I cannot imagine if he had tested the Omega II with the Egmont Signatures series...

Best!

Has anyone compared an Omega II/717 system to an MDR-R10/ASL MG Head system?

If you live in the USA, brand new K1000's can be had for $500.

BTW, you still owe us pics on the "nude" K1000 mod.
