The Centrance HiFi M8 thread - Page 325

post #4861 of 5791

The tpa6120 could handle balanced inputs (not used with M8 it is running on single ended-inputs).

But definitely (mine with tpa6120) does not provide balanced output.

Don't know how single ended outputs should be converted to balanced outputs by placing 4 resitors and 4 capacitors on a separated board;

4-pin XLR has common ground (2R on Pin 2 +4) what could never be with bal. outputs.

L+ and R+ from SE are directly (7R) connected to L+ R+ on the "balanced" side.

helpless + perplexed regards Martin

Btw Pink Panther, have you plugged in a balanced HE-6 to your HiFi M8 before....how's the performance? I think you must point this out to Michael Goodman and see what he has to say regarding your findings above. I'm very curious and I want to learn more about this too. Thanks for the heads up never the less.

Perhaps you could mail centrance with your findings and then report back to us.

ok, that's what I will do.

The HE-6 performance is very well, but there is no difference between single-ended and balanced output.

Best regards martin

I hear you Pink Panther...if there's no difference in sound quality from the single-ended and balanced output then it's totally pointless in implementing the balanced out on the HiFi M8. There should be a difference between the single-ended and balanced output if it is implemented correctly....if not the balanced output on the HiFi-M8 is totally redundant. I look forward to hear Michael Goodman's take on this. At the mean time I'll try to loan a balanced headphone from a friend to check on this.

Just a warning on HE-6, it needs lots of juice.  Look into high current desktop amps.  Look for wattage, I don't know any portable amps can drive it to authority.

@pink panther How loud were you listening and to what music?

post #4868 of 5791

I've been listening since 3 months at different levels and to (nearly) any kind of music with many different phones.

That is not my issue.

From my point of view it is impossible to get a balanced output from ONE unbalanced stereo amp (tpa6120).

It would at least take two in parallel. Or any other kind of fully (true) balanced output layout.

Regards Martin

Couldn't a balanced signal be easily converted to single ended?  I'm no engineer, but couldn't the balanced signal just get routed to the single ended output and just not share the benefit, but still share the signal and power?

HiFi-M8 is also a powerful headphone amplifier with balanced outputs

This is the description on centrance web site, can't find a page where it's described as balanced amplifier with balanced output, I suppose Martin could be right and Mr Goodman should at least explain a few things

Balanced does not mean more amplifiers. It's just an improved way of wiring. See;

Fair enough I may be confused by the design of my balanced desk amp, still I'd love to hear from centrance

Well after reviewing pink panters evidence on my unit, it looks to me he is right. There is no difference in the power of the balanced output, and the connected ground pins are a clear proof. I have fooled myself thinking the balanced connection is better, but same loudness. So this is only a balanced connection but not a circuitry.

I checked all official statements by Centrance they never claimed the Hifi-M8 is fully balanced, only it will drive balanced Headphone. So it was wishfull thinking on our side and marketing on their side.

Greetings from a perplexed Dan
