Got it. Thanks. Again, stupid question.

Since my version also works over USB which my desktop, is there a way of just using the amp section on the M8 from any device that is already doing the DAC portion?

The mini-M8 might be the answer, but also check out the new International +....

Digital inputs only, no analog...

That's true with every variety.

Can you post some links to this "International +" ?

So I got a response from Centrance regarding my m8 order from 2/16/14 that was "shipping April 2014."

"Dear [kayza],

Sorry about the delay. The units are finally here and we are sending them out as fast as we can. [Other Centrance employee] will give you the updated ETA and tracking number shortly.

[Centrance employee]"

Horray! Maybe I'll have it by the end of May!!! Getting excited to use my HD700 with it, and now that UAPP for Android has a 10band EQ, I can tame the harsh peaks the HD700 have!

Trying to stay away from dacs that use the Windows native drivers and possibly run out of sync with input because of it like my AK100 Mk2 does.

Less then 1 ohm impedance.  And you can use an analog input or digital...

Thank you for all the input! Any word on the mini m-8 price or release date? How does the m-8 sound with se 846

I was wondering if any of you hifi m8 owners had the opportunity to compare it with a Vali... I hadn't the time to make a side to side comparison, but for what I hear it's like the small schiit can drive better my dt 770 with better stage and separation. Any opinion?

The volume pot is noticeably noisy while turning it.

The roll-off at the low end just confirms why my T1 does not have the same amount of rumble/impact on M8 compared to my DX90/O2 combo.

The volume pot is noisy.

The noise floor is audible unless you get the mod

Does seem that there is a tad bit of roll off for the lowest octave 20-40, but not much after.  Even with this roll off, I have found the bass to sound much better on the m8 than it ever did with my HP-P1.  I definitely prefer the sound of the m8, even when it had hiss before I had the mod done.

Its not a fair comparison to the DX90 until the mod has been applied to the m8.  Pre-mod there is no debate about which is quieter.  Even after I am sure that the DX90 is probably better but it just wont be audible.  Just on paper.

The mod feels like stripping M8 of what makes it attractive in the first place. Which is definitely will reduce the power. Doesn't make sense to me since I only use headphones with it. The noise is clearly audible even with headphones.

Yeah it's not a fair comparison, considering DX90 is a  $419 all in one device and the M8 a $699 device which still requires a separate transport.

At least for me the M8 i (DAC/amp device combo in general) is showing it's age and  about to outlive its purpose once DX90 fully supports the USB DAC function (all current DAPs and future DAPs already support or will support USB DAC feature). A DX90/O2 combo drives my T1 way better than the M8 regardless of the transport I use on M8.

The M8 as DAC is getting outdated by the latest DAPs being released by different manufacturers. I was hoping it's saving grace is the powerful amp, but the noise even for a 600 Ohm T1 and apparently colored FR no longer cuts it for me.

Hi,

I played a little with mine (it's only a week old) and with all my headphones I can't hear any noise (from 40 to 300 Ohm) while the hiss is present only with my iem, so have you considered your unit could be defective?

I don't have this noise you speak of.  I'm also a headphone only guy and I don't hear anything, even from my Grados...

We are talking about volume Pot noise which is noisy regardless of gain when you turn it even with music playing. While at high gain and no music playing my T1 and DT235 has noticeable hiss while no music is playing. it's very faint in T1 but more noticeable on DT235. Med and low gain are quiet but it's a moot for 600 ohm headphone.

It never bothered me while music is playing but since getting the DX90, it just highlighted that M8 just has not as dark a background as DX90. This is masking some micro details in the music. Then the roll off at both edge of FR, it's more noticeable in the low edge. While the bass is punchy and present it clearly is lacking the rumble and the depth compared to DX90/O2 combo which makes M8 sound anemic especially on bass heavy music.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my M8 as it was the first device I got when I first went out to look for a portable hifi rig. But things are just happening so quickly in the mobile hifi world and there are imo much better options than M8 in terms of SQ alone.
