Well, no tube rolling with the M8...

Reference Recordings has a sale on their whole site, and among other things, I got their HRx 2011 sampler, which has 16 tracks from their releases at full recording resolution: 176.4/24. It sounds pretty damned good through the Hi-Fi M8 over USB from a Macbook Air driving a pair of HD-600s over the balanced output. In Mac OS X, make sure you have Audio MIDI set to output up to 192/24 otherwise the OS will downsample to whatever it's set to. I'm using VLC, but I'm sure iTunes would be fine as well.

Has anyone else tried this? I remember when HRx first came out, it was kind of painful to set up a system to play them back, but now there are lots of good USB DACs that will easily play this stuff back.

That is a big plus for us "set it and forget it" types.  No time to make it sound right, I just want it to BE right for the little bits of time I get.

Oh, I've been using my M8 as a USB DAC into my Burson Soloist SL recently.  Middle Gain, Max Volume (thank you for all the help, David@ CEntrance and Chris @ Parts Connection!), 1/8" jack out to RCA's, and it sounds really, really good.  Add to that I can use my iphone or my computer as a transport, and it is a pretty fine source.  I'm dying to get a bit of time with a truly reference level dac, and see just how good the HIFI-M8 is (or isn't) as a dac.  I suspect that it gives up a bit, and that that last bit comes at a high price...

I'll try and answer that question for you when I get mine. Though that's not until sometime next year though. hehehe.

I would be able to compare it with the Bifrost (original) and the NAD M51. It should be interesting to say the least.

Yeah, I'm trying to avoid tube rolling as it's another layer of cost that I don't want to get in to. :)

If I do sell the PanAm, perhaps there is space in my future for a Crack.

Hi---

I've been using audirvana plus on my mac at work.  It does the sample rate changes automatically with hifi-m8.  Great sound with the HR-X recordings.  You may want to check out MA Recordings hi-rez disks as well.

Take Care---

Jerry

Good news for some folks here. The developer of the USB Audio Recorder Pro app has released for beta testing an app he's been working on for a while due to high demand from peeps like us!

The app is USB Audio Player PRO, and as the name implies, it's a USB Audio Player (as opposed to USB Audio Recorder).

I've been testing it out for like the last 30 minutes, and I'm absolutely happy with it.

The reason why I'm posting this on this thread, is because some of us Hifi-M8 LX owners were looking for a portable transport.

As for myself, I'm happy to say that I've found that transport. No need to spend a pretty penny on the Ak1xx or new Sony dap, I'll just use my phone as I originally intended to do so.

Anyhow here's the post from the Android phones and USB DACs thread: HERE

Amazon or ebay, search USB OTG

Custom OTG cables seem to be pretty rare, especially micro USB to USB B. A quick Google didnt bring up anything nice - just adapters. A couple of us made our own. If you are up for it, I posted a short tutorial in the DIY forum.

Just wondering if there is any update on firmware update for Hi-res native support on the iDevice M8 without going thru the CCK route?
To charge the M8 using the wall wart and without an iDevice attached, should the switch be left in the center or moved to the left or does it not matter?
