The Centrance HiFi M8 thread - Page 226

Okay, I am happy to say that Centrance earned a customer and his support. Can one person change a lot? Not really. But if a company pays attention to his customers, listen to them, solve their problems, answer their needs. It will be many more than 1 customer only.

I like how they listen to us and promise us about the feature we are looking for.

I like how they solve their customers problems and give full support.

That's how you become a legend.

At my side, my plan just became very simple. I am getting FiiO X5. 24/192 playback. It will have enough power for pretty much everything so when I want to go light, X5 + Spiral Ear SE5way.

Then I will get that promised Hifi M8 (with coaxial input) and pair with X5 whenever I am willing to carry a small bag with me and add extra taste to my music. Also drive any full sized power hungry cans that I can buy in the future. Also don't forget that I will be using M8 with my computer too. That's that one device rule them all.

Alpha Dogs come to my mind firstly for full sized headphones but then I again, when you have the power of M8, the choices are pretty much limitless.

I would like to thank to Mr Goodman from here, he is doing an excellent job as far as I and other users can see.

@ IronLung: We have your issue solved!

Our customer IronLung reported hearing some background noise with sensitive IEMs. He tried JH-13, Shure 535 and other headphones with balanced armature design. Other customers did not report excessive noise, but IronLung did not like it - his lungs may be made of iron but his ears are not -- they are are very sensitive (no offence, just praise).

While I didn't have too many IEMs laying around (I'm mostly an over-head guy), CEntrance is located relatively close to Shure and I have some friends there from way back when. I used to run an engineering Dept. at Shure... Ah, the good old days...

Long story short, we obtained a couple of pairs of 535 headphones and confirmed that you could indeed hear some very faint background hiss if you listen very carefully and if no music is playing. Of course, if music IS playing, you better grab a hold of that volume knob, as those headphones are ULTRA sensitive and you could blow your ears out.

You see, HiFi-M8 is wa-aay overpowered for IEMs. To compensate for that, it does have a gain switch, which reduces the output signal level by a lot, to make sure it doesn't rip the IEMs (or your ears) apart, but it's probably not fair to use its might to drive sensitive IEMs, which require tiny amounts of power.

It's like taking your Aston Martin grocery shopping -- you don't get to see what the Bond car can do.

When I listened to the 535s, I didn't find the level of background noise offensive, but with CEntrance, the customer comes first.

We've tried several ways to lower the background noise for IronLung, and we succeeded.

We now have a mod. We could call it the "IronLung mod", but an even more appropriate name would be "The IEM mod."

We've modded the unit for the customer and will be sending to him shortly.

Meantime, if anyone finds themselves experiencing too much background noise, let us know. We have a mod for that!

Woohoo! Can't wait! :D "IronLung mod" - I like it :D

A few pages ago we were talking about coaxial input solve all of our problems. There are many daps with coaxial output option (X3, X5, DX50 etc). I said maybe Centrance hope in and tell us, guys we hear you and in the near future your dreams will come true.

Well that's what exactly Mr Goodman said several posts ago in here (just read the last a few pages of the thread). So not now, but in future, they will make it real. For more details and preorder and all, I think it is best to ask him.

No ETA yet, but let's hope "near future" means soon :D Either way there's that preorder queue and I've got saving up to do

Hoichi, finally we find our way to get the rig we want right? Which source you are going to take? I will settle on X5 and pair with that new incoming Hifi M8.

That really depends. My OCD tells me I should do it right and wait for that coaxial, but since I do a lot of my listening indoors and sitting anyway, if I get the M8 first, I can pair it with my laptop and get to enjoy it sooner.

So, I might do just that: save up, order the M8, get in line, and if by the time my order is ready the coaxial input is still not there, take the iDevice version. If coaxial arrives, however, I'm going to get the X5 or the X3 (the X5's build is supposedly better but James said quality on the new batches of the X3 have improved as well).

DX50 is also a possibility. Reviews and comparisons should be cropping up any time now.

Does this Mod only affect the lowest gain setting?

I knew this would open up a can of worms... Look - no worries!

This mod affects the output level. We lowered the output by 6 dB across all gain settings. The output power is less with this mod and so is the noise.

If you mostly use overheads, you don't need the mod. If you use the IEMs and don't have any complaints about the noise, you probably don't need the mod. If you are in the minority and feel that the normal level of noise is too much (one customer so far), then we can make the mod for you. It will affect the large, hard-to-drive overhead cans. They will get a little quieter. Most people will not need the mod, though, so don't worry. Be happily listening smily_headphones1.gif

Hardware. We actually lower the hardware gain. It's like installing a governor in your car, so it does not go faster than a certain speed. Again, most people won't need it.

Michael, since the Cypher Labs Theorem 720 is out, any plans to upgrade the battery?

p.s. still wish you success on the 24/96 front for the M8.

What's so wrong with the battery on the Theorem that it should be upgraded by CEntrance?

?? I think you read my question wrong.  I was just wondering will Michael upgrade the battery in the M8 to match the Theorem.
