This is great idea - to make universal version without usb-in.

Or...why not just have all three? idevice capable, SPDIF/optical in and usb in.

I dont really see the point of making it LESS of a possibly great all in one device.

@mgoodman:

I know the M8 has balanced outputs but I assume due to format factor limitations, its not a truly balanced end-to-end chain? The exact specs of the M8 are still unclear to me but I will assume there is only one AKM and one output stage in this little beast. Not a criticism, just an observation.

Michael, Centrance - Would you mind replying with a post that definitively describes the use of the M8 as a DAC only - basically, the appropriate settings of gain and volume for the 2 VRMS or whatever is the accepted line out signal.  I have read here middle and high gain, with the volume at 12:00, 1:00, 3:00, full on.  For clarity's sake, please post the most accurate settings.  Thank you!

Does the 4 pin connector make any difference than having 2 balanced XLRs? Seems a lot more convenient to have the one 4-pin version.

There shouldn't be any difference there other than connectivity to your existing devices.

Totally agree.

When I started this debate by asking for an "universal version", I was indeed considering all 3 inputs: USB + Optical + iDevice.

This will reduce by half the inventory for the distributors. I am sure many distributors are very afraid to carry a product that has 8 different SKU !

An alternative solution, if space inside is too tight, is to make some "user exchangeable" input module:  With a small screwdriver and (a lot) care & patience, the user could swap the module N°1 ( USB + iDevice) with Module N°2 ( USB + optical), or ....the unit should be able to accept 2 or the many modules availables : 1=USB, 2=Optical, 3=iDevice, 4=Coax......

line out is i believe - Gain 2 and volume on full. See post number 2 on the impressions thread for FAQs.its just started but there is a post there regarding Line Out function.

I actually think the rubber feet are crucial. Consider the LX models as well.

I used the rubber band as feet.

I suggested something similar for the output modules quite a while time ago, using some kind of exchangeable faceplates and a ribbon connector of sorts. Turns out that's pretty close to what they have in place already. However, making something "user exchangeable" is really kind of a nightmare from a warranty perspective, especially for something so compact and complex. I'd love to see something like that built in such a way that modules could be swapped out without needing to crack open the entire case (maybe just a panel or something), but once you start getting into that it might just make more sense to have multiple different devices rather than trying to cobble everything into one and compromise all over the place.

OK, BUT how does it works without special software like USB Radio recorder?  I prefer to use a player with REAL user interface & music file management (playlists, artworks, que lists...)

So, what are the bitrate limitation when NOT using USB Radio recorder ?
