You're going to love the DACmini. Top notch device, and the Centrance folks offer superb support. I have the 1 ohm mod and variable out mod and I enjoy it every day.

No one is contesting that Android is a hugely popular and widely used OS. Most are trying to point out that compared to the large number of Android devices out there, very few natively support USB DACs. It would take a concerted effort on the part of many manufacturers plus official support from Google for Android devices to even come close to the type of use for music playing abilities.

I would LOVE Android support, as I have a Galaxy Note II incoming, which has been reported to play well with some DACs. I just don't think CEntrance should worry about any additional work on the Android front and further delay this launch any more. A future firmware option would make more sense should demand be high enough. Most DACs that work with Android weren't developed specifically for it.

I preordered the M8 as a replacement for my current amp/dac that has a regular computer USB dac interface on it. It works flawlessly with my G Note II without being a "made for android" device. A lack of the same compatibilty for the M8 would be a dealbreaker for me.

Yeah, welcome to the DACmini CX club - and to the 1-Ohm mod membership!   What amazes me most about the DACmini CX is how, after several months of comparing it to everything I manage to get my hands on, thus far, I'm always left scratching my head at how well it does with just about any headphone (except the T1, for which I still don't have the right amp).

The DACmini CX' DAC section remains the best I've heard, in my admittedly limited experience, and I actually prefer its amp section with the LCD-2, to using the Burson Soloist. It "sounds" more powerful than it is - great dynamics with the LCD-2, tons of detail, and so neutral with the 1-Ohm output impedance mod - just what the LCD-2 needs.

I can't imagine the M8  being anything less spectacular - a versatile piece of gear that people just will not want to part company with.

Thanks for the replies!
I had originally planned to get the DACmini awhile back and that's when I discovered the M8.I figured it was worth the wait to get something transportable. Well, anyway I just couldn't pass up the price and while following the M8 pretty much decided you can't go wrong with anything from Centrance. So I've got an LCD-2 just sitting here waiting for this beauty....wink.gif

man, I feel exactly the same you do!

this is waaay too tempting, but I'll stick with the Hifi-M8 so I can take it to work also. I don't know about you guys, but I don't think the M8 will be quite up to the Dacmini's performance. I'm sure it'll be close, but not quite there.....this of course is just the thoughts of a guy who hasn't heard either one of these devices.redface.gif

I admire your perspective.  You're less likely to be disappointed having modest expectations - and more likely to be surprised.  (Low expectations - a path to happiness.)

The dacmini and HIFI-M8 both are to use the same power supply, I think (Pretty sure it is posted back several pages, when a couple of us asked).  They may be much closer than not, unless the Centrance team had to taper back on the HIFI-M8 power consumption to get reasonable battery life.  I know my DacPort that pulled power from a USB bus was a stunning piece of gear - it is the reason I'm standing in line right now.  If the HIFI-M8 is that good, with battery power, idevice and USB digital input and balanced output, Centrance and I have done well.  Anything above is bonus, and with the voltage swing the HIFI-M8 has, I suspect bonus... (actually, the more I stand in line, the less I care about battery, to be honest.  Away from an outlet is starting to mean 1964 ears customs and an iPod Touch 4g for me, and not very often, tbh.)

So, will my iPad 2 still need to go thru CCK connection or work straight to jack with M8 30-pin cable?  Hope this is not too dumb a question - don't yet own an iPhone and unsure if iPad and other IOS products all work the same with M8.  Also, will cable be available in longer than 3" length if needed?  I also lack common sense and ordered a B-stock DACmini CX, can't wait!  Any comments on how critical the variable output mod is to add?

We presently live in a "DAC rich environment", with a veritable cornucopia of options to choose from, even within an application (e.g. portable) and price range, as evidenced by this head-fi thread:

DAC Popularity Check (2013 Edition)

Reminds me of that line in Adaptation, where the Nicholas Cage character is reading a book written by the Meryl Streep character, and quotes from her [paraphrased] "We are overwhelmed in our daily lives by the myriad of choices in the modern world, and that the passion we have for a subject may be only a mechanism to reduce our options to a manageable level."

Sorry for long silence, guys. I have to put in a lot of time at the lab these days... It's exciting and challenging at once.

It feels a little bit like war, but we are winning. The good news is that we have no casualties, and are gaining ground every day :)

I think that ultimately it will be an application-related call between DACmini CX and HiFi-M8. They will be more similar than different. However, keep in mind that DACmini will still give you a little more output power, as it relies on wall power. HiFi-M8 on the other hand will give you tone shaping and iPhone capability, aside from the obvious benefit of internal battery power. So that's the difference in a nutshell - powerful vs. portable.

Thank you for your DACmini order! We are killing two birds with one stone. You will love it and we'll get to clear out warehouse space in preparation for M8. Everyone wins :)

iPad will work with HiFi-M8 without the need to use a CCK. You could use M8's supplied short cable or the longer cable that comes with the iPad/iPhone. Practically any cable that offers a USB plug on one end and the 30-pin (or Lightning) connector on the other end will work.
