Question about setting line out levels?

Hello all, 

 

My home audio set up in a Xonar DX going line out to my C421 headphone amp. It's a great sounding setup for sure, but I'm a bit concern about the volume output that this set induces. I've been told that I should have the volume output of the Xonar set to maximum to provide a clean line out to my amp, but this produces far too much volume even on the lowest settings on my amp once I reach a point where the sound in balanced across both channels.

 

I just wanted to see if it was truly recommend that I run my source at that volume level, or if there could possible be a better level?

Don't stress too much about that recommendation - set the Xonar output to the level you're happy with. If it sounds good to you, it is good.

 

The main reason to keep the source signal strong is to minimise amplification of noise and interferences brought by the connection. Also stronger signal requires less amplification and that means less distortions. But if the source signal is too strong it also has drawbacks - you already know that :)

That's what I'm going to continue doing. I would really like to be able to send out the full signal and maximize my audio quality, but I would like to preserve my hearing :C
