For Jazz and Acoustics i'd give it to the 4.ai'. For other Genres the W4 performed very well especially Vocals. I still wouldn't say the 4.ai's are an improvement. But they are both great to have, when you first here the 4.ai's im sure you will be more impressed than the W4.

EDIT: Forgot to mention for the 4.ai I heard small details ticks of sounds of the music that I've never heard clearly before. The detail retrieval of the 4.ai's is very good for an IEM the details sounded better than even my HE-400.

Yea. I'd agree with you. First impressions of the 4ai does impress more than the w4. However after some critical listening or on the go, vocals on 4ai sounded abit thin and not as lush, smooth than the w4. But the clarity on 4ai is indeed amazing. But to me, fit wise, i find the fitting and isolation on w4 better. Nonetheless, both are great to have!

Anyone know of a good CIEM to upgrade to? I was looking at the 1964 V6

Might be better off asking in that thread to get some more general recommendations.  FWIW I've not heard many complaints about 1964 stuff.

Thanks for the heads up. That thread was very helpful in narrowing down my choices. I meant to post back earlier, but I guess I forgot smily_headphones1.gif

Hi, I'm kinda new to head-fi, and ya, I've narrowed down to these two IEMs... I'm sure I'd love the 4.Ai, other than my PERSONAL hatred for wood... does it come in different colors???

nope unless you get the custom 4A

Currently have 3.Ai but I'm finding on some mixes the treble is a bit too pointed.  Experiencing sibilance/painful peaks at moderate volumes.  Would the 4.Ai be a better choice?  I love absolutely everything else about the 3.Ai, including the full and impacting bass.  Just wish there was a tiny bit of treble rolled off.

Check the fa 4e xb if you like the heir 3ai, impactul bass and great treble

The 4.Ai bass is leaner than 3.Ai but I think tighter. But no, it will not have the same weight and impact. I honestly think the PFE 232 is a better 3.Ai than the 3.Ai - with the caveat you need a proper setup to tame the treble and bring out the recessed mids. If you are using straight out of a smartphone then 3.Ai smarter choice. Phonak have exited the market but I have it on good authority they will honour the 2 year warranties and have spare parts for at least that long.

4.Ai soundstage and imaging is better than 3.Ai. In pretty much all respects it is the superior IEM to my ears over the 3.Ai other than bass. I really do believe the 4.Ai requires only more bass body and impact/slam and it would be the perfect IEM at price point. I have not heard the FA-4 yet though. The 5.0 and SD3 went with "full sound" signature mode which is not for me. Equally I understand why people like them.

Sometimes treble issues can be the material or the dac/amp you are using. You do tend to encounter poor treble execution with sub-standard sources versus the rest of the spectrum. Heir treble is pretty good and certainly not nearly as aggressive or prominent as other manufacturers. There has been a trend over recent years for manufacturers to chase "hifi sparkly treble" sound. Heir certainly does not do that. There is no other way to say it, if you find Heir treble a bit much for your ears then I am not at all sure you should explore other IEM manufacturers

I find the 4.Ai's bass levels to be quite satisfying already. But keep in mind this is coming from a listener who once described the K702's bass (through a good tube amp) as "perfect."

I find the 4.Ai bass quite satisfying as well.  I guess depends what [people like.  Also pretty surprised these dont get talked about as much as they should.  I think they are very competitive at their price range.

Considering it really does perform almost as well as its ($700) custom counterpart, I must agree that it is a great buy at $400. Yet the title of "value king" must be bestowed upon the 1964 V6, which is, essentially, a $650 JH-13.

Oh that finally came out? Ive been out of the CIEM market for a while.  If I was in the market, I would take a serious look at a $650 JH13.  I had the 16s and liked them.
