Heir Audio 4.Ai - Appreciation/Impression/Review Thread - Page 73

Also it's mentioned two cables - a spare - are included?confused.gif

New theory: The guy was drunk off his ass, hearing distortions, having double vision and all. Explains the review.

No, what explains the review is he's an amatuer who knows little to nothing about audio. Does he walk into a stereo shop, go over to the system playing music and turn up the amplifier full blast then criticize the speakers for distorting? There is absolutely nothing that can be gleaned from his experiment other than that there was distortion for some reason. Was it the headphones or was it the iPhone 4S's amp being overdriven? Just because one headphone doesn't distort when doing this and another does doesn't necessarily mean it's the headphones fault, that headphone may be more taxing on the amp causing the amp to distort. In my experience this is the more likely scenario.

Regardless though, even if it is the headphones it shouldn't be held as a negative because it's just a plain unsafe thing to do. I've found for the average recording setting the volume to half way on my iPhone 4S is borderline too loud for me, and I'm fairly certain I probably listen at levels a little louder than I should, turning up the volume to full blast would be absurdly loud. In my opinion even mentioning this in the article is unprofessional and unethical, it's invites other users to try it for themselves potentially damaging their hearing.

SwimSonny for new PCMag reviewer. Don't worry, I won't drink on the job or do silly ear drum bursting distortion tests ;)

Ha haa ha ..good one

Whoever wrote that review is very, very dim. It was a lazy review coming from a magazine of that size.

Welp, I'll steer clear of that review then...haha

Question: have any of you gents used a Fiio E5 or E6 with your 4.Ai? I need an ultraportable rig for weightlifting so I was considering a little Fiio amp to pair with my Clip Zip, but I don't know if it will sound any better than straight out of my rockboxed clip.

A little too big for me I think. My Arrow 3G is already pretty darn small, but not small enough to stick to the Clip Zip and clip to my gym shorts.

I haven't used those, but I use the e11 with my zip and I think it's a very nice improvement in sq. IMHO

I think it is as small, what are clips dimensions, I am talking about cricri not cricri + which is bigger. It's smaller than my iPod nano 3rd gen, it's real tiny!

did you demo with some of their stuff as well?

They do that bass test for every headphone. It's meaningless to almost all of us but some do EQ their bass way up so maybe it's worth noting. Iphones max out is not clipping unless there is an unusually low impedance. He goes on to do nothing but praise the device so I don't understand the resentment. 4/5 is a great rating for what appears to be a great phone.

No, just my gear. I probably spent more time chatting to Martyn than demoing to be honest! Was there for about 3 hours in the end.
