Mini=>RCA with mp3?

post #1 of 11

Hey everyone, know that I have an amp, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a mini=>RCA that I can use to hook my iPod up to my PPA, since I have so many mp3s for now. I feel like since my source will be an iPod dock line out and mp3, there should be a sort of "barrier," that is, a point where it no longer pays to go beyond that point or I just begin to expose weaknesses.

Email Adam and Nate over at zucable.com. Ask them to put up and ebay listing for a Zu Pivot mini>RCA of the appropriate length for you. They will post it up with a generous buy it now price considerably lower than thier list. Most people will agree that the pivots are an excellent cable.

Wouldn't the Zu cables be overkill with mp3?

Well, I guess it's really up to you, a 1.5m pivot off of ebay is only about $69. At least thats what it was when I got mine last summer. I dont think thats overkill really, unless you're listening to nothing but 128kb mp3.

My local CompUSA had the Monster Cable MK series 400 Mini-to-RCA cable that works great.

Of course you are talking to a non-believer when it comes to cables.

My Zu Pivot is great for that very use, although I go Out of a Karma dock with the RCA and into a SuperDual with the mini for testing my FLAC files and the Dual.

Hmm...I'll look into it and see what happens. Bear in mind, however, that not many of these mp3s are encoded in Lame, the vast majority I got from Napster, meaning 128kbps.

A Headphile ( www.headphile.com ) 1 meter mini-to-RCA in copper is $40, which, considering the source, is probably the right level of quality to be putting to this job. I've always found that, when I improve my audio signal path, not only do my 128 kbps mp3's sound better, but that I can enjoy lower kbps mp3s as well. It IS true that the better your audio path, the greater the difference between your highest and lowest quality sources. I find that it is also true that everything improves, it's just that the highest quality sources improve so much more than the lowest quality sources, making the difference greater. So, $40.00 put into a decent mini-to-RCA once will increase your enjoyment of your mp3s every time you listen to them with respect to, say, a $6.00 Radio Shack or Circuit City mini-to-RCA. I actually started with the $6 RS IC and heard the difference that the $40 IC made. Considering all of the money I put into the source, amp, and all of the music, AND considering the observed improvement that this incremental $40 made, it was EASILY worth it.

Firstly, thanks to all for the response. I've been looking into it a bit more. I've been looking to Larry of Headphile and the people of Zu cable, though they've been less enthusiastic. I just don't want to approach the point where I buy a cable that too nice for the mp3s--such that those encoded at 128kbps sound terribly. Yet, I want something good for those of higher bitrates. I'm going to see if I can audition the Black Gold and the Standard in Silver or copper, as well as checking on the Zu cable again. I don't suppose anyone has further comparisons of these? Oh, does anyone have any experience with the Turq cables that fiddler makes? Thanks again!
