I disagree. S500's are in no way a basshead can.

Just ordered an S-500 on amazon. I still have some gift card cash left, so I looked into pads, but I can't find the HM5 or WS55 pads. Any other substitutes (that are on Amazon)?

I was looking at these two, but I'm not sure if these will be compatible:

The stock pads are the best in terms of sound quality, get the WS55 if you need extra comfort, but you'll lose bass.

I guess I'll wait to see how my ears like the stock padding.

I'm glad these are so cheap. I plan to by one for my sister before her friends convince her to get a Skullcandy or Beats.

I received the Brainwavz HM3 pads, and they suck. They're too big to use without a mod, the quality is crappy (re cheap-feeling padded vinyl), and they are UNCOMFORTABLE. I have a set of Audio-Technica HP's that I traded with Achmed. The pads are the same size (too big) but of high quality. Getting these was a waste - but at only $5 delivered I'll deal with it.

I DID swap the pads from an $80 set of Sony HP's tho, and the sound is about the same. Comfort wise they're better. Too bad the Sony pads are a light matt grey - Lol!!!

Hey guys, I came to this thread to ask if anyone can compare this to it's predecessor, the s400, as I haven't been able to find any comparisons between the two

If you read thru the thread there are a few comparisons between the 2, as well as most saying the S500 are an upgrade.

They came out at the same time. Not predecessor ans successors but brothers. The S400 is the little brother with a smaller driver and smaller price. FWIR, basically the S400 had less bass, more forward mid, a more mid focus as the S500 brought some more bass amount and extension and more detail/resolution. There are comparison if you search. http://www.head-fi.org/t/626332/the-new-jvc-ha-s400-affordable-carbon-nanotube-cans-for-the-masses/60

Some liked the S400 signature more. Way too much pad changing on the S500 and talk about how many hours of burn in was needed and how it tamed the S500 mid-bass for many real stock A/B comparison of the two.

By the way there was a new model released on the 17th called the S680. Should be worth keeping an eye on.

It seems the S680 will be officially released on the 17 of febuary, 2014. I can't wait!!!

^ OK, the diff between the S500 v. S400 v. ES700 v. WS99s to me.

JVC S500: They have a linear sound that is tilted toward a V type of sound but to me they are pretty balanced. None of the sonic spectrum sounds recessed but they no doubt have more emphasis on the lows and the highs rather than the mids. The bass is relatively fast, tight and goes pretty deep with a medium-large soundstage. A great set of cans that does most genres justice esp. most contemporary types of music like pop, EDM, and rap/ hip-hop, etc. A stupid good bargain for the price with this type of performance.

JVC S400: These are mid-centric cans no doubt about it. Their lows and highs are adequate but is nothing to write home about. Others have reported with lots of burn-in the highs will really open up, but for me they are still lacking the extension i get from the S500s. The star of the show on these is their lovely mids, which almost make the S500s feel almost a bit lacking.  Due to the mid focused nature of the S400s, they are an easier/ relaxing listen and many have described as more "musical" when compared to the S500s. Overall i would say the S500s is the more "balanced" headphone out of the two.
