Or you can get the best on-ear pads available for S500, the ATH WS55 wink.gif

Oh, I forgot about those! They seem even harder to find, though. Also really expensive. What effect do they have on the sound?

Not sure I wanna make these bulkier though, since I'll be using them exclusively on the go. At home I use my beloved HD 558s.

I really like the HM5 pads mine came with but they make it so the S500 is no longer portable by my standards.

For any of your lurkers out there who are considering picking up a JVC HA-S500, I have mine up in the forums for sale (mint condition with WS55 pads).  They are like new and sound great, I just prefer my Vmoda M80s and have no need for 2 portables.  Message me if interested

Yeah pretty hard, try contacting AT service using the form on their site.

If you need more info just send me a PM.

As for the sound, its more neutral than stock pads with lowered but much more accurate/realistic bass response.

How would you compare the two?

Thank you, I'll keep it in mind.

I bought these lnib from another head-fi'er with the WS55 pads already installed, so I can't compare to the stock pads.  From what I gathered on here though, most people say that the WS55 pads reduces the bass slightly (but for the better, more balanced sounding?).  Biggest difference I believe is the comfort, the WS55 pads are very soft and comfortable for on-ears, can't really comment on the stock pads.

Oh, sorry, I by "the two" I meant the S500 and the M80.

They both have similar sound signatures but the m80s are built like mini tanks, mostly all metal with kevlar reinforced removable cable. They are also very small (almost comically small) which I really like. Sound quality the m80s are a little more refined but it's mostly the indestructible build is what won me over.

Nice. Yeah, they definitely look sturdy. And stylish, too, although I think I personally prefer the simpler look of the S500s a little.

That's an extraordinary achievement for JVC considering the Vmoda cost nearly 5 times more.

I might replace my CAL with these because the CAL have small soundstage and weak bass.... Do these beat the CAL in bass and soundstage?

Also if you mod them to "over ear" with the Brainwavz HM5 pads... Does this make the sound worse?

I haven't heard the CALs, but these will definitely be an upgrade. The soundstage is all depth, there is no width to speak of. These have tons of bass, but it's sort of soft sounding in my opinion. I prefer the stock pads to the HM5 pads, but I'm one of the only few. The HM5 pads are much more comfortable, and the micro-details are increased. They also make the stage feel a little bit bigger.
